The universities can certainly verify the details in the recommendation letters from the respective recommender. That is why they even ask for contact details of the recommender. The LORs also specify these contact details so that university can connect with the recommender if they wish to ask for any clarification regarding your profile.

Although universities may not provide any specific word counts for LORs, it is advised to create a letter of recommendation for around 300-500 words. The LOR must have 4-5 paragraphs, including introduction and conclusion. At least 2-3 traits must be highlighted along with suitable examples to improve the credibility of the information. If you are applying for any specific specialisation such as electrical engineering and you refer to lor samples for MS in electrical engineering, you are advised to not blindly follow the word count and limit your response to a one A4 size page for an LOR.

Few universities can even ask for two academic LORs and one professional LOR. Therefore, it is important to check the LOR requirements beforehand and approach the selected recommenders well before the time. Connecting with recommenders near the application deadline will leave you with very less time to discuss the points you wish to highlight in the LOR.
