As an MBA programme is quite a sought-after program, every document, including the LOR must be carefully prepared. Below are few things you must not include in the recommendation letter which can jeopardize your application:

  1. The recommender must not include weaknesses or negative points, unless asked by the university. Incase the recommender mentions a weakness, he must show it in appositive light, mentioning how are you working on it.
  2. The LOR must not have too many traits which seems too good to be true. It is better to include less traits with instances to make it more realistic.
  3. Avoid putting excessive technical details in the MBA LOR;

Yes, in case your manager is unavailable, you can get a professional LOR for MBA from your colleague. However, the colleague must be senior to you in designation to recommend you. In addition, it would be better if they have worked with you closely in a professional capacity. This will ensure that your LOR for MBA can have the best impact, despite not being from your manager/supervisor.

Pick up any good MBA recommendation letter sample and you will see that an authentic and relevant LOR creates a better impact. To create an impactful LOR for MBA, you must find a recommender that has witnessed your aptitude for management first-hand. The recommender must know you well and be able to discuss why you would be a good addition to your desired program. Through proven instances of your management prowess and personal qualities, they must be able to showcase your profile in a good light and assure the Ad Com that you can contribute substantially for the program.

The key differentiation factor of an MBA LOR is its professional approach behind it. While the LOR will talk about your aptitude and eligibility as a future manager and leader, it is also essentially about setting you up as a good prospective candidate for the MBA program. Instead of focusing on technical prowess, you must include instances where you showcased your managerial acumen or leadership skills.
