Being proficient in German certainly opens up more job opportunities to international students in roles where language is important, such as Teaching and Retail. 

However, it is okay if someone is not proficient in German there are plenty of top organizations that give preference to an individual's skill set over language proficiency, and most IT jobs don't require German language proficiency; however, proficiency in English is very important.
