Here's the current B.Tech admission criteria at Thapar University (TIET) — straight and short:


Eligibility

10+2 (PCM) with at least 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST) in Physics, Mathematics, and one of Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational subjects. 
Appeared in JEE Main 2026 (or equivalent) — this is now the main mode for top engineering branches.

How Seats Are Filled

📌 50% seats based on JEE Main 2026 rank (All India merit).
📌 50% seats based on 12th PCM marks (board merit) for some branches — but many core branches now admit mainly through JEE Main

For B.Tech at Thapar University, you need to have passed Class 12 with Physics and Maths (plus one of Chemistry/Biology/CS) and meet the minimum percentage cutoff set by Thapar. Admission is mainly through JEE Main scores, with some weight to Class 12 marks.

Merit-based scholarships at Thapar University are given to students with strong academic performance. For first-year UG students, eligibility is based on Class 12 marks and JEE Main rank. From the second year onwards, students must maintain a high CGPA (usually 8.0+), with no backlogs, to continue the scholarship.

There is no income limit for merit-based scholarships.

  • You must have a bachelor's degree of at least 3 years in any discipline from a recognised university.

  • You need to have studied Mathematics either at the 10+2 level or during your graduation.

  • You should have at least 60% marks in aggregate in your bachelor's degree (55% for SC/ST).

  • Admission is based on merit (10th, 12th, and graduation marks).

In short: 3-year degree + maths at 12th or graduation + 60% (55% for reserved) is required for MCA at Thapar.

To get the BTech Merit Scholarship-I at Thapar University, applicants must complete their Class 12 and must have scored more than 95%. Additionally, the applicant must be among the top 50 students based on their All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Main 2024, regardless of her/ his engineering branch. 

For continuation of the scholarship in the second year, applicants must have a minimum of 8.50 CGPA in all previous semesters. In BTech Merit Scholarship-I, students get a total fee waiver.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) offers full-time Engineering courses at the UG level. Admission to the BE courses is both entrance and merit-based. For entrance-based admission, candidates must qualify for the JEE Main entrance exam, followed by the counselling process. The university also accepts the NMAT exam for admitting students to its Management courses. The eligibility criteria to get admissions into MTech/ME courses at Thapar University are candidates must complete their BE/BTech/BSc/MSc degree in a relevant stream from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 60% (55% for reserved categories and industry-sponsored). Moreover, for the selection process, the university considers the scores of GATE followed by an interview process.

The basic eligibility requirement to pursue an MCA course at Thapar University is that candidates must complete their bachelor's degree from any stream with a minimum aggregate of 60% (55% for reserved categories). Moreover, candidates should have studied Mathematics in their Class 12 and graduation to pursue MCA at TIET. The selection process is based on merit, which is released by the university after evaluating candidates' academic performance in Class 10, 12, and graduation.

To continue the Thapar University MSc scholarship in the second year of the course, candidates are required to qualify for certain eligibility criteria. They are requried to acheive a minimum of 8.50 CGPA in all the preceding semester and should not have any backlog in the year of consideration and must have passed all the courses offered in the semester prior to the year of consideration.
