Since, Optometry is not mentioned in the list of subjects for the UGC NET examination, the following points maybe of help to you. One can give the UGC NET examination in a related subject such as Life sciences (code 45) or Physical sciences (code 35). Still, you are going to have to study more and make sure your post-graduation degree will be in the field of the chosen subject. There are other competitive exams by National Testing Agency such as CSIR NET exam in which there is one subject that can be related to Optometry called Life Sciences. Considering your educational background, the best option available for you in the CSIR NET examination is Life Sciences.
MSc in Environmental Science and BSc in Zoology cover the major areas of life sciences from ecology, physiology to genetics, molecular biology, and environmental biology topics where you have your existing knowledge and could prove to have the strongest base.

Yes, you can appear for the UGC NET exam, but only in a few subjects that match your education. The UGC NET exam is normally taken by the aspirants of Masters Degree or equivalent in a related discipline.
Having a Masters Degree in Dentistry from Public Health Department, you can apply for UGC NET in Public Health (if any) or courses like Medical Sciences or Life Sciences, depending on the specialisation and the specific syllabus of your Master's programme a part of which. However, courses like dentistry or specific medical fields may not fit directly into the UGC NET syllabus.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the official notification for the UGC NET 2024 December session on November 19, 2024. The application form link for UGC NET 2024 is now also available. The UGC NET 2024 June exam was conducted on August 28, in two shifts. The subjects covered during each shift are mentioned below:
Shift 1 Subjects: Museology and Conservation, as well as various Economics topics (including Rural Economics, Co-operation, Demography, Development Planning, Development Studies, Econometrics, Applied Economics, Development Economics, and Business Economics)
Shift 2 Subjects: Punjabi, Tamil, and Geography.

The authority will release the UGC NET 2025 June session notification on the official website at ugcnet.nta.ac.in. Along with the notification, the UGC NET 2025 application form link will be activated at ugcnet.nta.ac.in. The last date to apply for the UGC NET 2025 June session will be mentioned in the notification, which has not yet been released. Here's the UGC NET eligibility for Biology exams:
- Nationality: You must be an Indian citizen.
- Minimum 55% for General/General-EWS and 50% for OBC/SC/ST, Third gender, PwD candidates.
- Marks should not be rounded off. Enrolled in M.Sc. or completed 10+2+3 years; Must complete the qualifying degree within two years from the date of CSIR-UGC NET Test result declaration.
