UGC NET exam pattern 2024 is prescribed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). According to the exam pattern, the UGC NET 2024 exam comprises two papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. The time duration of the UGC NET exam is 3 hours (180 minutes). Both papers contain objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs). A total of 150 questions are given to the candidates combining paper 1 and paper 2. UGC NET exam does not have a negative marking scheme. The candidates are awarded for correct answers but no mark deductions are made for incorrect answers.

Since, Optometry is not mentioned in the list of subjects for the UGC NET examination, the following points maybe of help to you. One can give the UGC NET examination in a related subject such as Life sciences (code 45) or Physical sciences (code 35). Still, you are going to have to study more and make sure your post-graduation degree will be in the field of the chosen subject. There are other competitive exams by National Testing Agency such as CSIR NET exam in which there is one subject that can be related to Optometry called Life Sciences. Approximately 16,000 students sit for CSIR NET each year, while just 2,500 – 3,000 students pass.

Considering your educational background, the best option available for you in the CSIR NET examination is Life Sciences.

MSc in Environmental Science and BSc in Zoology cover the major areas of life sciences from ecology, physiology to genetics, molecular biology, and environmental biology topics where you have your existing knowledge and could prove to have the strongest base. 

Earth sciences are mainly concerned with the study of things like geophysics, geology, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, and even if you have a few common topics in environmental sciences, you cannot expect that your background from zoology helped much in covering the needed geological content.
