In 1701, Yale University was established as a Collegiate School. As per the early history of the university, a group of 10 ministers led by the Reverend James Pierpont of New Haven met in nearby Branford in 1700 to form a college. Basically, in 1701, the Connecticut legislature adopted a charter to erect a collegiate school. But, the university's roots go back to 1640s. In 1718, the school became Yale College.
