What is the BEd Course?

The Bachelor of Education is a degree two-year course focused on pedagogical skills, teaching methodologies, and subject expertise.

Who can apply for BEd?

Candidates meeting the minimum eligibility criteria can apply for the BEd course. As per the eligibility criteria, graduates from any discipline, such as Arts, Science, or Commerce, can apply provided they have completed a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50-55% marks. There is also reservation for candidates belonging to reserved categories as per the government norms.

The eligibility criteria consist of the following - 

  • Educational Qualification: A bachelor's degree (BA, BSc, BCom, etc.) or a master's degree with at least 50% marks (varies by institution and category).
  • Age Limit: 21 years or older; some institutions have no upper age limit.
  • Additional: A few universities have state-specific criteria. For example, the IGNOU requires candidates to have an IGNOU BEd Teaching Certificate.

Choose the Right University or Institution. Candidate must do thorough research and identify universities or colleges offering BEd programs. Candidates must consider factors such as the location of the college, the course fees, faculty, and facilities along with ensuring the mode of study and decide whether it is a regular, distance, or online BEd program.

Checking for admission routes and whether the exams are done via entrance tests or merit-based admission. Many institutions conduct entrance exams such as DU BEd Entrance, and IPU CET. Many states even conduct their respective BEd entrance exams to shortlist candidates for BEd courses provided by participating universities. These exams evaluate candidates on the parameters of teaching aptitude, reasoning ability, and subject knowledge. Some of the most popular exams are UP BEd JEE, and IGNOU BEd Exam

Some admission is also conducted on a merit basis based on the undergraduate or postgraduate marks of the candidates.

Now that you have applied for the entrance exam comes the most important part of preparing for the exam. If applying through an entrance exam:

Start with getting familiar with the format and syllabus that includes GK, Teaching Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, and Language Proficiency. Once candidates are well-versed with the syllabus they must procure the study materials and use recommended books. Attempt practice papers to improve time management and confidence.

Meanwhile, candidates who are preparing for the exam must keep track of the dates of the exam and submit the application form. To fill out the application form candidates must follow the steps mentioned below - 

  • Visit the official website of the university/college or the exam conducting body.
  • Register with a valid email ID and phone number.
  • Complete personal, academic, and other details.
  • Upload required documents (photo, signature, mark sheets, etc.).
  • Pay the fee through the prescribed payment modes.
  • Save or print the acknowledgment or receipt.

The next process after registration is to appear in the exam and qualify for it. Counseling/Interviews: Shortlisted candidates are called for counseling or interviews where documents are verified. During the documentation process candidates will have to -

  • Educational certificates (10th, 12th, and graduation mark sheets)
  • Entrance exam scorecard (if applicable)
  • Identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.)
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Passport-sized photographs
