The career graph of a travel journalist is always on the rise, and if you are planning to pursue this career, then I must say that your decision is quite right. You, my dear, are on a right track and you are in for a treat if you wish to work hard for it.
The job role of a travel journalist is very interesting, and the work space is not limited to a cubicle with a desktop. You can actually travel lots of place, be a part of various other cultures and traditions, and give immense pleasure to your taste buds by the cuisine of several lands. To be a successful journalist, two things are absolutely essential, 1.Your knowledge in English 2.Your skill of communication. Without these two skills, it will be very difficult to be a travel journalist.
Have you watched the movie Yeh jawani hai diwani, bolly blockbuster, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Kabir? In this movie Kabir was a travel journalist, touring various places of the world. You can bag lucrative job offers from reputed channels like National Geographic.
As English is essential, you can study English Honours or English major, or Communicative English. After grads, you can complete your MBA in Travel and Tourism. You can also complete your grads in Journalism and Mass Communication, and then pursue with MBA.
Do not confuse between a Travel writer, and Travel Journalist. A travel writer will just write about various lands and cultures. But a Journalist will visit the places, talk to the local people, get a first hand knowledge of the culture of that place, taste various cuisines, will also tall about the unique experience that he had in that new land. So communicative skills are essential. One thing you can do, you can learn some foreign languages, like if you are travelling in Europe then you must know French, and if in America then Spanish. It is always fun to learn new languages and cultures.
But there are certain risks to this job, like you will have to visit hundreds of places throughout the year, you may not know about the place from before hand, you may not be comfortable in the climatic conditions of the place etc. But the job is very interesting and you will have no time to get bored.
If you are adventurous, love travelling, and expert in communication, then this job is ideal for you. Read a lot of travel magazines, articles, journals, do not be afraid of trying new things, never be judgemental about the new cultures and traditions. Be open minded and accept the traditions as they are.
