Utkal University is a state university recognised by AIU and UGC. The university is accredited with an “A+” grade by NAAC. The university has been ranked in the band 101-150 under the 'University' category by the NIRF Ranking 2024. At present, Utkal University has 27 post-graduate teaching and research departments on campus. The university has 381 affiliated colleges for different streams, such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Science & Technology, Commerce & Management, Medicine, Homeopathy, Law, etc.
Utkal University has three main departments and 31 sub-departments. It is the oldest university in Orissa and the 17th oldest university in India. The Utkal University campus is spread over an area of 399.9 acres with a total of 40 blocks. Out of these blocks, 26 blocks are designated for teaching, and other blocks include an administrative block, a health centre, a guest house, an auditorium, an indoor stadium, and hostels with accommodation for female and male students with 603 residential quarters. Also, the university has a separate building for the library, which has six floors and is spread over 30,000 sq ft inside the campus. Yes, Utkal University has separate hostels for boys and girls. There are a total of 13 hostels, six for boys and seven for girls. Every hostel has a common room where boarders are provided with computer, WiFi, Library, newspapers, periodicals, and television. The students are also provided with computational facilities and WiFi. Each hostel has a mess facility.
