Hi,
Hotel and hospitality sector is an industry that has seen an immense boom in past few years in India. Though it is a very popular and money making industry in the west but India was not exposed to this industry well before the last decade. But, from past years this industry has been growing each year creating 20% more job opportunities year by year. Many people get confused that hotel management is related only to the hotel sector. No, it's a very vast industry. It's a hospitality sector that includes allied industries like bank, hospitals, BPOs, call centers, financial firms, stock markets and so on. So, first thing to remove from your mind is the idea that it is only related to hotels.
Now, coming on to the career opportunities there are 12 government and approximately 28 state owned colleges and a number of private colleges providing you with a degree of bachelor in hotel management/ travel and tourism. The best institutes among them are the top IHMs that are Delhi and Mumbai. IHM, Aurangabad and Welcome Group are also the leading private institutions. Selection in IHMs is through an exam NCHMCT JEE held in April. Another career opportunity is with Oberoi Hotels through their STEP program. You should google about it. Secure a good rank and start building your career here as it will provide you a lot of opportunities. This industry does not demand scholars but rather it demands smart people with practical knowledge about their subjects and a will to do hard work. English communication skills are must. You have to be extremely fluent in speaking English otherwise you will not be able to compete in this industry. After successfully completing your graduation you either work as a management trainee in some 5 star hotels or if your performance was extremely good, you can also get a managerial post directly. Other option is to go for higher studies and pursue MHM or MBA which will open new doors of opportunities.
