With global entertainment honchos like Walt Disney, IMAX, Warner Brothers, Sony etc. signing up huge contracts with Indian animation companies, local animation design studios are gradually establishing their credentials overseas and building their skill sets in this high potential global market.

The Indian animation industry is expected to double its revenues to nearly $1.5 billion by 2010. By the year 2012, the industry will have room to accommodate 300,000 professionals. At present, only a little over 20,000 professionals are working in this techno-creative field, which sets the stage for lucrative career options for vast number of students.

Animation

The word animation comes from the Latin word "animare", which literally means "to give life to." There are a lot of debates going about Animation being an Art or Science. This debate is justified since Animation, as known to Indian subcontinent, is majorly considered to be the use of software. BUT the fact remains that Animation cannot be software driven. In fact, it is software that is animation driven, which means that software is just one tool to execute Animation requirements.

As can be seen from the Animation Production Pipeline, Animation starts from the very fundamentals of Story, visualization & character definitions. Thus unless a student is strong at the Pre-production stage, he/she may feel handicapped in making good animations. A lot of emphasis has to be given to this stage if we have to produce our own content. Indians are great story tellers. We have that in our culture. It is this aspect that has to be revived and given great emphasis upon.

Similarly, Animation can find various ways of expression i.e., Claymation, Stop Motion Animation, 2D Animation, Sand Animation - all these form various ways to say the same story. This is what we need to understand that Animation is an Art, which we need to master.

Next comes the popular computer 3D animation that refers to the work of creating moving pictures in a digital environment, which is three-dimensional. Through the careful manipulation of objects (3D models) within the 3D software, we can then export picture sequences which will give the illusion of movement (animation) based on how we manipulate the objects.
