Animation can make almost any experience more dynamic and richer. It can create illusion of movement with a bunch of images or create user interface elements in gadgets to make them easier-to-use. It is through animation techniques, we are able to see special visual effects in movies and ads. When we create custom views in the applications or create our own personalised views of games or educational software, we are still using animation.

Walt Disney movies like 'Aladdin' and cartoons like 'Tom and Jerry' are classic examples of traditional animation. Movies like Avatar, which look more realistic and involve live action elements, are good examples of modernistic developments in the field. In animation, you can specialise in several specific fields such as 2D animation, 3D animation, or visual effects or further into expert areas like character modeling, and lighting & texturing.

Eligibility

Success in animation is directly related to your creativity and visual imagination. A flair for sketching or drawing and the ability to work for long hours in front of a computer is a must for an animation expert.

If you have the dedication and the passion, you can join a diploma or bachelor degree in animation after class 12th. Institutes like National Institute of Design (NID) may accept student specifically from fine arts, while the IITs that focus on industrial applications of animation may only accept candidates with engineering or technology backgrounds.

Career Prospects

According to NASSCOM, animation and VFX industry in India grew 17.5% in 2010 to reach the $10 billion mark. More awareness about the animation and gaming industry has opened up new career prospects for those who want to enter the industry. Trained talent in the field is also much in demand by the television industry.

Some of the best animation training institutions in India have their own production studios, where students get hands-on training working as assistants or even on live projects. These institutes may also offer placement assistance to deserving candidates.

Animators often start job as Graphic or Animation designers, Visual Designer, or Flash Designer and can move up the ladder to either become trainers or work in production houses as Animation and Graphics Manager. They may work in Motion Graphics field or as a Generalist for CG and VFX productions.
