Besides colleges setting steep cut-off marks for admission, now coaching institutes are also screening students for competitive exam coaching based on cut-off scores. The trend is fuelled by an abundance of high scorers in SSC and HSC examinations. It is becoming an admission norm where popular coaching institutes for competitive exams, to be taken after class XII, are asking for either an overall aggregate of 90% or at least in mathematics and science, reported the Times of India.

Many IIT coaching centers conduct their own tests to admit students apart from seeking only high scorers. As coaching centre's begin their admission process much before the SSC results are announced, so eventually students who miss out on the cut off score in their board exam face rejection by the coaching institutes where supply may be more than demand.

Narendra Bhambwani, vice-president of the Maharashtra Coaching Class Owners' Association told TOI that institutes do it in an effort to get the best students. According to Bhambwani, many institutes even offer discounts to high scorers just to attract such students while other centers provide intensive coaching for high scorers. As per a TOI report, a student scoring 82% in her SSC board was rejected by a private tutor.
