Different IIT cut offs for different boards
Only students in the top 20 percentile in their respective boards will be allowed to sit for JEE Advanced exams – the final step to IITs. Preliminary data of seven boards across India shows that the Class XII scores to get into the top 20 percentile vary widely from board to board.
It has been found that the cutoffs for Top 20 percentile in different boards (for general category students) this year is as follows:
- West Bengal – 58%
- CBSE – 77.8%
- Tamil Nadu – 78.1%
- Karnataka – 67.5%
- Uttar Pradesh – 65%
- Madhya Pradesh – 64%
The scores are expected to be less for other categories, for which data will be compiled soon. Also, percentage figures for all education boards will soon be released in the public domain. Read more
The fairness of including only the top 20 percentile rankers in the JEE Advanced exam is being questioned. Two separate studies show that the students from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) perform better than students of several other boards in national level exams, raising the level of competition for students from these boards.
