HC notice forces CLAT to revoke first university allotment list

CLAT will revise the first university allotment list, published on June 2, after candidates alleged withheld results, swapped university preferences, and wrongful denial of reservation.

The first university allotment list pertaining to the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2013 was published on June 2, 2013. With candidates complaining, it will have to be revised. After four complainants from Kerala filed a writ in the Kerala High Court, and the HC has issued a notice to CLAT 2013 convenor HNLU Raipur.

CLAT 2013 takers alleged withheld results, swapped university preferences, and wrongful denial of reservation. According to a notification dated June 10, the CLAT committee states:

“In view of certain unavoidable important developments after the publication of the first provisional allotment list such as:

(a)    the Hon’ble Court’s direction to publish the withheld results of three candidates and allocate seats to them in order of their merit;

(b)   doubts expressed by certain candidates regarding the order of their preferences for universities and the subsequent allotment of seats;

(c)    consideration of ST Hills at par with ST/ST Plain for allotment of seats; and

(d)   fresh guidelines provided by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, for reservation of seats for Dependants of Freedom Fighters;

the First Provisional Allotment List is being reviewed and revised thoroughly from all angles. Based on the outcome of the review, the revised list will be notified on the CLAT website at the earliest.”

Last Wednesday, five candidates from Kerala alleged that their preference for Nuals Kochi in the CLAT forms has been swapped for CNLU Patna in the CLAT convenor’s records. As a result, they were allotted CNLU despite securing ranks within Nuals’ cut-off. Another IDIA diversity initiative Nagaland scholar under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) Hills category also alleged of being denied seat under ST quota after exhaustion of the ST Hills quota.

After four of the five complainants from Kerala filed a writ in the Kerala High Court, and the HC issued a notice to CLAT 2013 convenor HNLU Raipur, as reported by legal website Live Law.
