How to crack AIPMT 2014? Get tips from 2012 topper
Currently pursuing his MBBS from India's top medical institute, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), Rishabh Jain topped the prestigious AIPMT (All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Test) 2012 exam with an All India Rank (AIR) 1. This young lad from Roorkee has been a brilliant student throughout his academic years and secured 95.2% in his CBSE Board Examination.
Talking about his mantra of cracking AIPMT 2012, he says, "Just remember two things: Study the same day and never miss any test. No matter what!” In an exclusive interview with shiksha.com, Rishabh shares his experience and preparation strategies to help AIPMT 2014 aspirants crack the exam successfully.
Q. According to you, what is the minimum time frame needed to prepare well for AIPMT? How long did you prepare for it? What was your preparation strategy?
Two years of dedicated study are enough for the preparation of any medical exam. I prepared for the exam alongside my 11th and 12th and got selected in the first attempt. My preparation strategy was to revise the topic taught in the class the same day no matter what especially physics and chemistry and never miss a test even if you haven’t studied it (The two things my teachers always said to me).
Q. Is it necessary to join a coaching institute or is self-study good enough? What study plan did you follow for your prep?
Coaching classes do give you an advantage of forming a schedule but again it doesn’t suit everyone. If you can manage your school then it’s advantageous. But yes you will have to study a lot if you join a coaching. In this view if you take a correspondence of a coaching institute and study along with your school it is easy to manage. You can join some private tutors if you have doubts regarding questions. Most top rankers usually do more self study than study the coaching material all through.
Q. How did you divide your time between chapters/section? Which chapters/sections did you spend more time on?
My plan was to divide the time on the basis of the amount of material I have to study in a subject per day and not the amount of time I have to spend on a subject. This helps you to automatically devote more time on the thing you are weak in.
I started with the subject I liked the most (in my case chemistry) and solve its MCQs to make sure I understand the topic and then go on the weakest subject straight. The subject you have an ‘ok-ok’ interest; revise after these two.
Chapters like Modern Physics, Electromagnetism, work power energy, waves and SHM, Heat and Thermodynamics are very important for AIPMT.
Chemical bonding, electrochemistry, P-d block, equilibrium, Aldehydes carboxylic acids acetones and reaction mechanism are very important.
Q. How did you work on improving your weak areas?
For improving your weaker areas start the basic book (bio in case of NCERT), start with easy questions of chemistry and physics (if you are weak at it).
Q. How much time did you spend on revision?
I did my revision in the form of tests. I had joined a Test series. For revising physics and chemistry what I did was to make the summary of every chapter in physics and chemistry in the form of formulas, graphs, important statements on an A4 size paper and stick them at the end of the chapter. My whole organic chemistry was on a full chart paper, inorganic chemistry important reaction orders on 3 papers. For revision of biology, read only NCERT in the last two months.
Q. Can you recommend any useful study material/ reference books to AIPMT aspirants?
I don’t exactly remember the books I referred to but I read the common ones. However, most of the students know which books to read.
Q. What did you do right to crack AIPMT?
Just remember two things: study the same day and never miss any test.
Q. Since NEET was introduced in the year 2013, do you think students should be extra prepared for the exam this year? If yes, why?
No need for extra preparations as I think that the basic syllabus is same and the same body (CBSE) will be setting the paper. However, stick to the NCERT syllabus.
Q. 5 Top tips to crack AIPMT 2014
- Don’t leave small topics like biomolecules, polymers and environmental chemistry (in chemistry) and communications (in physics). 2-3 questions decide whether you are selected for the exam or not.
- Read physics from NCERT once atleast; especially heat and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrostats, optics, modern physics (their graphs are very important).
- Towards the last two months read only NCERT for biology and for extra questions just take tests.
- Don’t stop taking tests (if you have joined anything like a coaching institute) towards the end especially. I remember taking the last grand test just two days before the AIPMT mains.
- Last but not the least - Don’t let yourself reach to a saturation level.
