The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has decided to start certificate and diploma courses in Malayalam also from now on, said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The courses will be delivered in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through the Study the Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) platform. The Education Minister tweeted: “Happy to share that in line with the NEP, IGNOU is developing and starting certificate/diploma level programmes in Malayalam through SWAYAM. This will extend learning opportunities to Malayali speaking students, including those abroad in their mother tongue.”
“As recommended in the New Education Policy and as envisioned by PM Narendra Modi Ji, we are committed to promote learning in Indian languages, make our education system linguistically-diverse to improve learning outcomes,” he added.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), had in July, allowed BTech programs in 11 regional languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi and Odia. Fourteen engineering colleges from eight states of India have already opted to teach engineering courses in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali from the new academic year. AICTE has translated the first-year course material and it is still working on the second, third and fourth-year programmes. Though the course will be available in regional languages, technical terminology used in course materials will continue to be in English so students do not feel left out.
