IIFT Entrance Exam – First Day, First Show!

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) conducted this year's entrance exam for admissions to its two-year full-time residential MBA International Business (IB), today, November 24, 2013.
The exam, conducted in around 20 cities, got mixed reactions from students. For some the exam was pretty easy, for others it was a bit tough, especially the Quant section. Aman Bansal, who took the exam from a center in Rohini, Delhi, said, "The paper was difficult as compared to last year. The GK (General Knowledge) section was the easiest, DI and Quant were the toughest; especially Quant if you compare it with last year. LR (Logical Reasoning) was also easy except one question which had one passage with 6 long questions.”
Another test taker, Vishakha, who's a working professional said, “The paper was easy and if I'd prepared better, I could have cracked it. Since, I am a working professional, it’s difficult to concentrate on both - my job and the exam. This is my second attempt, and I hadn’t seriously prepared for it. Initially, I tried managing it by going to coaching classes but that didn't work." She added, “I find IIFT way easier somehow than any other exam. Although, the chances of scoring are better in NMAT, I still find IIFT better.”
For Anjaneya Gupta, the paper was "average but lengthy". He said, “DI and LR section was the easiest and Quant was the toughest." He prefers IIFT entrance exam over other MBA entrance tests due to it's paper-based exam format.
"Questions from GK section were the easiest, though, it included questions from all around the globe,"said Abhijeet Singh. "Overall, the paper was good. LR was the easiest, DI was tough and Quant average. After taking the exam, I am hopeful to crack it. Keeping my fingers crossed," he said.
On asking about how different was it to prepare for the IIFT entrance exam as compared to any other MBA exams, Abhijeet replied, “Preparing for this exam was different as this has sectional cut-offs unlike other exams. If you don’t get through any section, you would not be selected. So, one needs to prepare accordingly."
According to students, the preparation for IIFT is quite similar to that of other exams except that GK is a add-on, which needs special preparation.
Any Glitches?
IIFT is a paper-based exam and thus unaffected by technical glitches faced by students taking online exams. However, a student informed that one of the questions in the English section had a wrong choice. According to her, “There was a question that had four options – “a” , “b”, “c” and “d” and out of these four we only had to select one. However, the fourth option – “d” was incorrrect." Other students informed that these kind of mistakes in the paper happen every year.
What next?
Most of the students shiksha.com spoke had their Plan B ready if IIFT results didn't turn out in their favour. “If I don’t get through IIFT, I am looking forward to Narsee Monjee (NMIMS) and a good percentile in CAT. I haven’t yet started preparing for the GD/PIs," said Aman, but he plans to get himself enrolled in a PDP (Personality Development Program) at a coaching institute.
Similarly, Abhijeet is taking other exams like CAT, NMAT and XAT. "I am hopeful to get through at least one of the exams. I've already started preparing for the GD/PIs. It’s my suggestion to all the aspirants - Take coaching classes and follow what they teach," he said.
However, for Anjaneya, no plans really worked. “I haven’t planned anything as of now. Actually plans do not work. I have been making plans since Std 12th, but all in vain.” He said, talking about his bad luck, “I have taken coaching classes, referred to sample papers and also taken mock tests but it did not work because the level of mock tests was not at par with the standards of these exams.”
