Workshops, competitions and hackathons celebrate the spirit of teamwork at ASU, says Nandini
I have always been fascinated by the idea of building computer applications that made the everyday life of people easy. So, since early school days, I was sure about opting for a career in software engineering. I have been good at academics and hence, when it was the time to choose core subjects in Class 11, I chose to move ahead with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with Information Practices as one of the main subjects. Two years passed and I cleared Class 12 board exams with good grades. But, there was another tough decision waiting for me ahead, i.e. to choose which institute to join for the course I have chosen to pursue.
I appeared for JEE Main like every other student aspiring to be an Engineer. I even took coaching for the preparation. But unfortunately, I could not crack the JEE Main exam and that is when I started looking for private colleges and universities offering BTech courses. I appeared for entrance exams of Shiv Nadar University, SRM, Galgotias University, Bennett University, Apeejay Stya University and BML Munjal. I managed to crack the admission of almost all the colleges and I selected ASU.
I selected Apeejay Stya University because of the variety of subjects they were offering as a part of their curriculum. I had the liberty to choose from an array of multi-disciplinary subjects that ranged from Mural Arts to Spanish Language Lessons to Stock Market Basics.
Apart from the multi-disciplinary subjects, the courses offered as a part of our BTech degree included some of the advanced topics such as Artificial Intelligence, IoT and Cloud Computing. These two were the major reasons for selecting ASU.
The classes for BTech Computer Science and Engineering usually start at 9:30 am and continue till 5 pm. The schedule varies from student to student depending upon the subjects chosen. I try to miss the minimum number of classes possible as the management is strict with attendance and a minimum of 75 per cent attendance has to be maintained throughout the semester.
ASU also has several student clubs that are responsible for organising events and keep campus life happening. Some of the clubs include Panache, Music Club, Dance Club and Rotract. I am an organising member of Institutional Innovation Cell and Proxima – Computer Science Club. Under Proxima, we organise various coding workshops, competitions and hackathons throughout the semester for students to learn new nuts and bolts of computer programming. The events are attended by students from different departments of the university and not just the engineering department. These competitions and workshops celebrate the spirit of teamwork.

As far as my experience is considered, I have found positive changes in my behaviour and I have learned to deal in stressful situations without losing my calm. I have become more patient and I am looking forward to more growth in my actions.
