New JEE 2013 formula finalised!
In the new formula, board exam scores would play a crucial role for IIT aspirants, even though they will not carry weightage in the final merit list. Only the top 20 percentile students from various boards would be eligible for the Advance exam - the final hurdle in the race for admission to IITs.
All engineering aspirants would have to take the Main exam for admissions to non-IITs. Following which, only IIT aspirants would need to sit for the Advanced exam as well. The top 1,50,000 scorers in Mains in all categories only would be allowed to sit for the Advanced exam. Those who make it to the merit list after the Advanced exam and are also among the Top 20 percentile holders in their respective board exams would be eligible for admission to IITs.
Suitable time gap will be kept between the Main and Advance exams to allow time for the results of Mains to be declared. The final merit list for admission to IITs, however, would be based only on the performance in the Advance exam. Read more
Final Format of JEE 2013

The combined number of seats offered by the IITs is around 9,000. Initially, it was decided that only 50,000 top scorers will be allowed to sit for Advanced JEE. But now, this opportunity will be open to 1,50,000 students.
With the necessity of being in top 20 percentile in their respective boards, students can no longer afford to neglect their school studies, if they want a seat in the IITs.
A raging debate is going on about how coaching institutes will be affected by this move. While some think that paying more attention to school curriculum will help students develop a deeper conceptual understanding and will help them to do better in JEE exams too, others feel that students will now have to face increased pressure of doing well in all the three exams - Class XII Boards, JEE Mains, and JEE Advanced.
