Top 20 tips to crack JEE!
Check out these expert tips by Faculty head – Aakash and Vinay Kumar, owner of Rao IIT –JEE, a Mumbai-based leading Test Prep Academy, to boost your preparation strategy for JEE.
1. While preparing a particular topic, pay proper attention to theory. Don’t jump to solving MCQs straight away.
2. Revise regularly what you have already learnt. Revision is a must.
3. Analyse yourself by taking tests.
4. Keep a track record of the test scores so that you know where you lack.
5. While practicing MCQs, always ensure a time bound practice. Keep a clock in front and measure your speed and accuracy.
6. In the beginning, set small targets for yourself like solving a set of 20 questions in 60 minutes. Then slowly decrease the time limit or increase the number of questions that you try in a given time.
7. Do not ignore easy topics, they are going to help you in improving your score.
8. At the last moment, do not try to learn anything new. It is better to practice what you have already learnt.
9. Discipline and sincerity towards your studies are the best tools. Without them you can’t succeed no matter how intelligent you are. There is no substitute for hard work.
10. Failing to plan is planning to fail. So you must plan whatever time is left for the final exam.
11. Focus on your speed but must maintain accuracy.
12. First attempt the subject section in which you are strong.
13. Don’t mark the problems in which you have doubt to prevent negative marking.
14. Use reference book only for reference. Don’t make it the primary book.
15. Practice more for the type of problems in which you are less comfortable.
Considering that this is the first IIT-JEE, the faculty head of Aakash suggests, “The only strategy for any competition is to be consistent, sincere and regular in the studies. What is important is that a student needs to be focused and versatile as well. The major difference is the weightage given to board exam for admission to NITs and the top 20 percentile cut off for JEE (advanced).”
Kumar shares the following pointers:
1. Go through Class XI and XII board books for theory and problems.
2. Give equal importance to all 3 subjects (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) while studying.
3. Study Board and JEE syllabus together to save time and develop better understanding of the subjects.
4. Prepare for simple and average level problems first.
5. Do not waste time solving lengthy problems.
Soumya Banerjee, founder & CEO, Attano – India’s first digital education marketplace too has some tips for the JEE aspirants that includes the 3R Approach:
- Revise - Chapter-level highlights, followed by revision questions, help build speed and mastery over the important concepts of every chapter.
- Reinforce – Six subject-level tests of an hour’s duration each test your knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Review – A full-fledged mock exam mimics the actual exams to determine how much you’ve improved. Students can better their scores by identifying areas of weakness and comparing their answers with the solutions provided
Banerjee advises, “Students should simulate the real-world examination experience during their preparation. JEE Aspirants should get used to taking subject-level tests and full length mock exams on their computers in order to be completely at ease during the JEE Online exam”
“All of this said; remember that the biggest differentiator on the day of the exam is you, being yourself. Be calm, stay cool, stay focused and don’t let the environment stress you out. Take each question as it comes and approach it with confidence & focus.” he adds.
Banerjee also suggests that students should spend time revising the whole syllabus, we hear experts talk about additional focus on the following chapters - Probability, Integral Calculus and Algebra in Maths; Mechanics, Rotational Dynamics and Geometrical Optics in Physics; Solid State, Physical Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry in Chemistry.
All the best!
