The UGC has sought “expression of interest” from faculty members and institutions for designing and offering 194 undergraduate (UG) courses from the humanities and social sciences and 155 UG courses from the sciences.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked for contributions from institutions and academics for the government's platform for online learning, SWAYAM.
The UGC has sought “expression of interest” from faculty members and institutions for designing and offering 194 undergraduate (UG) courses from the humanities and social sciences and 155 UG courses from the sciences. The subjects it is seeking courses in include geography, psychology, economics, English, Hindi and Sanskrit for humanities and social science streams.

For the science stream, the subjects are chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, and environmental science. In developing the MOOCs, the faculty will be able to “improve their academic score for career progression” as well as learn “capacity building by using ICT for teaching-learning purpose”. In September 2020, UGC had similarly sought an “expression of interest” for 171 courses for the humanities and social sciences. The subjects included history, political science, commerce, sociology, public administration and anthropology at the UG level.

The UGC has earlier asked the educational institutions and universities to accept Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by SWAYAM for credit transfer. The UGC has written a letter to the vice-chancellors (VCs) of the higher educational institutions urging them to do the needful in this regard. To ensure the continued flow of learning for the students during the lockdown (caused by the COVID-19 pandemic), the UGC has even shared the links of various initiatives of UGC and MHRD including the MOOCs offered on SWAYAM platform with the educational institutes.
The UGC letter reads, “In the prevailing COVID-19 scenario, universities and colleges are encouraged to make the optimum use of the SWAYAM online platform for the benefit of the students. The list of 82 UG and 42 PG MOOCs courses, which are approved by the SWAYAM Board, and ready to be offered in July semester 2020.”
