In a conversation with Shiksha.com, Dr Palak Gupta, Assistant Professor at JIMS Kalkaji talks about how the institute ensures that the curriculum stays relevant with industry expectations. 

Dr Palak Gupta has rich academic experience of over 18 years in teaching IT and Business Analytics courses and is associated as an Assistant Professor with Jagannath International Management School. 

1. What is the difference between the teaching methodology in your institute and others?

JIMS, Kalkaji practices innovative and blended teaching methodology integrating theoretical contents of the curriculum with practical aspects required and practiced in the Industry. Students get a holistic approach in enhancing their knowledge and skill sets that will help them in shaping and driving their career ahead. Role play, management games, case studies, live projects, industry based scenarios are regularly practiced in classes. A lot of emphasis is given in incorporating practical content in each course through actual cases, data sets and scenarios applied on modern tools like Python, Advanced Excel, R, IBM SPSS, NSE-NSMART Simulation, JAMOVI, ORANGE etc. We also believe in all-round development of the student for which a number of value added courses are incorporated in each Trimester like Personal Growth Lab, Finance Lab, Personality Development Programs, Placement Training, Mentoring Sessions etc.

2. How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?

JIMS, Kalkaji strives to provide immense corporate exposure to students through Guest Lectures, International Conference, Distinguished Guest Lecture series from international experts, workshops, seminars, Panel discussions etc. JIMS, Kalkaji believes in framing global framework for students through Foreign University collaborations with University of Westminster, London,  Technology Arts Sciences TH Koln, Germany, FOM Hochschule fur Oekonomie& Management, Germany, The American Business School - Delhi Institute of Design Agreement for Higher Education Program Implementation Bachelor in Fashion & Luxury Retail Management, American Business School(Exchange Agreement), Paris, Dimitrie Cantemir Christian University, Bucharest and Grenoble Ecole De Management. and Industry connect with Grant Thornton, SRCC, University of Delhi, PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Federation of Indian Export Organisations etc. JIMS-ANDC Incubator further facilitates entrepreneurial skills of students for self-employment, innovation and start-ups. Industrial Visits are regularly organized to make students experience how they can correlate their classroom knowledge with industry standards.

3. What qualities do your students have that other college students lack?

JIMS, Kalkaji students have an edge over other college students as they get a holistic environment of academic, co-curricular, cultural, sports and personality development. They develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills which enable them to evaluate data and information objectively. Communication is crucial in business and management, and students in JIMS, Kalkaji are often trained in effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Our students possess good leadership and teamwork skills and are able to work effectively with others, delegate tasks, and manage conflicts. Our students are taught to be adaptable and flexible in their approach to problem-solving. They often have a strong understanding of business strategies, including finance, marketing, and operations. This knowledge is essential in the business world and can give management students an advantage over students in other fields. We emphasize practical experience through internships, live projects or other types of experiential learning, which gives our students a head start in their careers.

4. Do you think the curriculum of the courses taught in your institute fits in the requirement of the industry?

To ensure that our curriculum stay relevant with Industry expectations, JIMS, Kalkaji actively seeks input from industry experts, incorporate feedback from alumni, and regularly review and update courses. To ensure that the curriculum is aligned with the requirements of the industry, JIMS, Kalkaji collaborate with industry experts, conduct surveys, and analyze market trends. We provide students with a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge that are relevant to the industry, such as marketing, finance, operations, human resource management, and business strategy. Our PGDM and PGDM-International Business programs include internships and industry projects, which provide students with experiential learning opportunities, real-world experience and exposure to industry practices. Such programs allow students to apply the theories learned in the classroom to practical situations. We invite industry experts, entrepreneurs, and business leaders to deliver guest lectures and conduct workshops. This provides students with insights into the latest industry trends, challenges, and opportunities. In addition to technical skills, our programs also focus on developing soft skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving which are crucial for success in the industry.

5. Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science & entrepreneurship?

JIMS, Kalkaji strongly supports innovation, technology, science and entrepreneurship. We collaborate with technology providers like IBM to provide online certification courses to our students in the domains of AI, ML, Data Science & Analytics. JIMS, Kalkaji has set up an Incubator in campus in collaboration with ANDC, University of Delhi for inculcating entrepreneurial skills among students. The Incubator provides a platform to the young generation for self-employment, innovation and enabling them in transforming their young dreams into reality.  A number of sessions are conducted by budding and established Entrepreneurs to guide and motivate students to become job givers rather than job seekers. Our campus is tech-supported and we use a number of advanced software for official and teaching purposes.
