Group Discussion (GD) Topics & PI Experience by Abdullah Salman, TSM Madurai
In a recent conversation with Shiksha, Abdullah Salman M. talks about his experience of GD & PI process for admission at Thiagarajar School of Management, Madurai. He talks about questions asked by the panelists and also has a few tips for aspiring students.
Q. What were the GD topics at the time of your admission?
There were no specific topics. It was Abstract and randomly selected like current affairs or digital payment etc.
Q. What were the focus areas during your GD preparation?
Current affairs, interpersonal skills, and communication skills. I was basically looking into communication part and also the main concentration was on content. It was also related to interpersonal skills like how you manage your skills and make it a team-building concept.
Q. What methods did you use to prepare for your GD?
I was taking the help of social blogs and Quora. I was keeping myself updated with the current affairs and it was dynamic general knowledge and not static one.
Q. Did you take any help (coaching centers/materials) to prepare for your GD?
I joined Career Launcher and Cetking. Also, I took mock classes for GD & PI.
Q. How many panelists were there?
There were 2 panelists.
Q. Who were the panelists in your GD & PI? How difficult were they to tackle? What was your overall strategy to tackle the panel and what worked?
They were professors. The first question is generally about yourself so you need to be very careful as if you don’t prove yourself in the very first minute of your conversation, you will fail.
Q. What were the questions asked in your PI?
I was asked to introduce myself and about my UG details. As I already had work experience so they asked about the same. They asked me about my roles and responsibilities and in particular, why I wanted to switch to the management domain.
Q. How did you prepare for your PI?
From Quora and I was confident enough, so not much preparation was required.
Q. What strategies (books/reference materials/coaching) did you apply for preparation of PI?
I sought help from Cetking. Also, I think that whatever you have written in your application form, you need to justify that.
Q. Did you happen to panic at any given pint of time during the GD & PI? Any particular moment in which you wanted to go back and change or may perform better?
Yes, I panicked. They will grill you like anything. I suggest that if you have any stress, then take a glass of water and calm yourself. Always think before you speak.
Q. How was your overall GD & PI experience?
Overall, it was good and challenging. There will be times when you will panic so I suggest to keep yourself cool, calm and composed. I think presence of mind is really required. Also you should not deviate from your point and be straight forward.
Q. What tips do you have for the aspirants appearing for GD & PI?
Be confident and be aware of current affairs. Questions will be asked from your educational background, so be well prepared for the same. Also, if you are not very good at the communication part, then I think you need to prepare for the same. For PI, one should be honest about what they have written in the application form. Give justice to your application form and be confident about the same.
Q. What is the one lesser-known fact about GD & PI?
It is only a tool to check your communication skills, confidence and team building. Don’t exaggerate things, be modest and to the point. Be in your own shoes otherwise, you will get rejected.
