Mystory@Huma Sheikh: How I chose my course and college
In school, I was always confused between Commerce and Maths. Arts was never an option but I eventually opted for Science (PCM) because I was quite confused about what if I choose Commerce now and shift to engineering later as I was a good sketch artist and interested in Architect Designing.
At Graduation level, I asked myself what I wanted to do in Post-Graduation. The answer was MBA as I always dreamt of being an entrepreneur and knew that MBA can guide me in this. So, I choose BBA as my Bachelors specialization. BBA helped me to learn exactly what I wanted to learn. A wholesome package of personality development Through PPTs and other special assignments which helped me to advance my personality to pursue MBA.
I had planned to pursue MBA from Pune as I had heard that it’s a corporate and IT hub. I researched about a few Pune colleges and felt that SBIIMS was the most genuine college among all those I had researched about so I decided to pursue MBA from there. It was suitable for my budget too and this is how everything fell into places.
How I cracked college admission
At SBIIMS, we have to appear in CAT and crack GD/PI to get admission. After cracking CAT I received a call from this college that I was qualified to take admission. A telephonic interview was conducted which I passed after which I was called to the campus to participate in further selection process. Getting admission in MBA colleges is a tough task. I had applied for many competitive exams like MAT, CAT and XAT. I didn’t do as well in MAT as I was expecting may be because I prepared by myself. I could not take coaching for MAT as I could not afford it. But then I prepared hard for CAT and scored well after which I received calls and invitations from reputed colleges.
I really wanted to get admission in Doon Business School but it was too far from my hometown and transport facility was inadequate which made me drop that idea. Later on in Pune I found out that Kirlosker was very good college. The college infra of Kirlosker in commendable but the fee structure was high as sky.
All about my college days
At SBIIMS, our college timing is like office working hours, 9:30 am to 8:00 pm. That’s to familiarize us with the corporate culture. Many interesting classes, workshops, and guest lectures are conducted during the academic sessions which keeps us busy. For extra work, we need to manage our timings accordingly. Among all the sessions my favorite is Communication Workshop. We are also given many interesting tasks like GDs, presentations, extempore and discussions, etc. These sessions help us in building our personality, become dynamic and confident. The ET (Economic Times) sessions help us stay updated always.
I participate in every festival celebration. I was crowned Miss Fresher at OCTAVE 2016, the college’s freshers’ party. After that, the opportunities never stopped for me. I won “Oppo Pune Fresh Face” contest, hand painted Buddha and participated in “Red FM Tashanbaz” in which I was a part of mime group. I performed a solo dance in our college fest “Vista- Manthan”. I am also the coordinator of all the events that are held in college.
Given a chance I would decrease the number of classes so that we can enjoy workshops more.
Yes, my college life has totally changed me. The communication and PPT workshops helped me a lot in evaluating myself, while my teachers helped me in being more confident and participative. They taught me to take more initiative, too.
My thinking went through a 360-degree change in college. I‘ve learned a lot of technical aspects through HR conclaves and conferences. I was selected in the Placement Cell where I got the opportunity to interact with many entrepreneurs and corporates. I was also the Ladies Representative of Student Council. These opportunities took my confidence to a new level.
