Mystory@Vanell Melodia

Silliman University is one of the most prestigious colleges in my city, Dumaguete. Ever since my pre-school years, I have been studying at Silliman. That was mainly the reason why I didn't have a hard time in choosing my college. I had to continue what I started. And I had to finish my studies in one of the most famous school in the country.

Having said that, everything was not about fame. Thinking about the quality of education that Silliman has to offer, I, and even most of the people around Dumaguete say that graduates from this school are really good people, with the right character, competence, and faith. And those are just some of the many traits that I would really want to inculcate in my life even after I graduate from Silliman University.

Before pursuing Bachelor of Science in Office Management course at my graduation level, I pursued two semesters of Mass Communication course. It wasn't hard choosing my first course because I really loved writing and communicating. I even dreamt of becoming an anchor woman in the biggest television studios of our country. Dreaming was easy but reaching the goal was tough. Let's just say, I took a lot of turns and detours in my life. Of course I have no regrets. I try to enjoy my life as it comes, because I would never be able to experience those stages of life again.

As soon as I grew older and wiser, experience was my best teacher.

Fortunately, I was blessed with a strong heart to persevere. I was very determined to move on from where I left off, and stand up from where I stumbled. The pressures in my personal life couldn't keep up with my lifestyle and the demands at school. Back then, I didn't know how to prioritise and keep that correct balance.

I shifted to another course. Office Management was a great opportunity for me to complete the rest of my college years. It was my second choice, after all. And I realised that it was okay. It was okay to make mistakes at first. It’s okay to change courses, for as long as you know what is the reason behind your decision. And for as long as you know where that would lead you. If you believe that it would be the best for you, then go ahead and continue what you have started.

The best lesson that I have learnt in all of my college years, was that, everything that happens has to happen. There are no coincidences. It happened because it was a blank canvas to create who you are today. That blank canvas that I was slowly painting my life on was never a regret. I would never choose a different path in my life. In fact, if I had to live this life again, I would still look for the people that I have now, and I would still choose the paths that I went through before.

My College Life

The people that I knew were so special to me and these people helped me grow. My classmates in my previous course still know me very well today, and I still make the time to connect with them and catch up. During college, there was a lot of free time, so there were a lot of chances for us to bond with each other. Being in college was fun because of the people I met.

The faculty was strict, some were motherly and some were like your worst nightmares. They used to give us a lot of work like projects, assignments and reading material. We also had to adhere to paper submissions and article deadlines. It was hard being a college student. But you had to keep up the faith that one day you will be out of that terror, you will just laugh it off and say, "I did it!"

Believe that there are chances and risks you must take so that you stop thinking about – what-if's.

Teachers were major contributors of stress, if I may say. Perhaps, they also contribute to a lot of knowledge and traits that I have at this moment. And in some way, I am thankful. Even though they say the most hurtful things if you are late or absent in their classes. They even go as far as making personal comments that can make you cry. But again, I was thankful because I was molded to the person that I am right now.

I would not like to change anything about the years that I have spent in Silliman University. I am happy for what I have become now. I am happy and confident to face the real world today.
