Overall, IISER is basically research-oriented. If you are coming here for placement, don't come.
Placements: It's a new course, so no idea of placement, and you should not be thinking about placement if you come to a research-oriented college. They are improving the placement cell now, like a student getting 90LPA abroad by a biotechnology company. Median package is almost 8 LPA.
Infrastructure: You find good infrastructure here, and the Wi-Fi facilities are also fast. Average food quality, IISER has a night canteen, medical facilities are good because AIIMS is nearby, like 1km from campus, sports facilities are also very good. The library is good here, you can get every book that is relevant to your academics and more than your academics.
Faculty: Teachers are very helpful here, all have good qualifications and knowledge, and the teaching quality is solid 9/10. The course curriculum is relevant, and the teachers are too experienced. TAs are also very helpful. If you have any doubts, you can ask them anytime.
Other: I have an interest in Data Science and research, so I took it. You can find lots of events and fests to enjoy and attend here. AIIMS is nearby, you can enjoy their fest too. Connectivity is good, like 7/10.

Integrated course at IISER, Pune.
Placements: While coming to placement training I learned and experienced a lot, which is worth the money invested for placements. Zeus Numerix and Shell are some of the top recruiters from the college of IISER, Pune. Comparatively successive rate of placements is huge.
Faculty: Attendance history is most important which admit has to write semester examinations without any punishment or penalties. Faculty members arrange extra classes for students who are unable to perform well in the mid-exams. Weekly assignments and challenges are prepared by them in Google link.
Other: Management of the college always says that participation is more important than winning or losing. Students dress conservatively according to their convenience, but it must be formal. They pave a path for creation, innovation, and implementation followed by succession.

Best college in academics for pursuing science, but decent in the infrastructure of sports complex.
Placements: Mostly, people go abroad to do research and do a PhD in my department. Students also prepare for GSI. In my course, there are no placements. In mathematics, the average package ranges from 7-10 LPA. The top recruiting company is Deloitte, but if students are referring for placements, then they should not join this college. Internships are similar to those in basic sciences, and most people go abroad for that. It is well-paid in India and Canada, i.e., a package that ranges from 40-50 LPA. Students used to go for Maitacs every year, but now people go to Tokyo, France, Germany, and the US.
Infrastructure: As compared to other IISERs, we have the worst infrastructure for living, but Wi-Fi, classrooms, library, and labs are the best in the nation. The hostel is double shared occupancy till the final year, or sometimes triple sharing. If students are non-vegetarian, then the canteen is the best place to opt for. Medical facilities are available, and there is a free check-up as well as insurance of 1.5 lakhs. Sports and games infrastructure is not so good. It is decent, but IISER Kolkata provides us with full independence to play at any time.
Faculty: We have one of the best faculty members in India. The knowledge level is top. The qualification background is good, and every professor has a postdoctoral position outside India in a good and reputable college. Many of them are PhD holders from outside India. The teaching qualities are quite good as they are mostly researchers. Some professors are good. They have won the national and the best teachers award. We have the best curriculum as it is relevant, with research, and includes going abroad. Some of the departments are really tough. It is tough to pass in mathematics, etc.
Other: I chose this college because I saw it as one of the best in academics, and in the nation, and I just failed in JEE Advanced, so I have to go somewhere. This is my destiny. For my course betterment, if professors were more lenient in the grading scale, it would be best. Events and fests are not conducted on campus, but we are trying to restart the culture of the fest.

My two-year MS program.
Placements: In 2023, out of 90 students in our class, 70 students were hired by companies that were invited for the campus drives. A few of them initiated their ideas by starting new ventures, which was really inspiring for the newcomers and helped us achieve more.
Infrastructure: The possibility of involvement in extracurricular activities was comparatively lesser due to the hectic schedule for exams, projects, and searching. Opportunities for leisure days were rare. The library was organized with 25,000 books, all fully relevant and oriented to the academic portions.
Faculty: Professors were strict supervisors even during the model examinations and its evaluation were at some higher standards which made the students to perform well in the internals exams. While developing newer projects, our professors were best in resolving the trouble.

The oldest IISER- IISER Kolkata.
Placements: Placements here are average till now. The average package is 7 LPA and the highest package is 12 LPA with placement percentage of 20%. But as the geological sciences field is growing and developing we can expect more and high placements in the recent future.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi is kind of average but infrastructure of laboratories and classrooms is quite good. Library has hundreds of books believe me you would love to come here to sleep. Mess food is better than most of the IITs and IISERs. Medical facilities include 3-4 ambulances, qualified doctors, and free medicine for all.
Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified, knowledgeable, and helpful You would love to discuss scientific things with them as all of them are researchers so you are going to get a good research exposure in here. Course curriculum is quite tough but no need to worry you can find time for extracurricular activities too. Students have to be aware of the exam time because you would need to study.

Pretty satisfied considering everything.
Placements: There are very few or no placements, the primary reason being that students want to pursue higher education or go into a different field. Though we have a placement cell and it does its work, mostly it’s the students who don’t want placements because the job might not pay well enough.
Infrastructure: Hostels and other facilities are all really good.
Faculty: Most of the faculty members are really helpful and cooperative, except for a very few. All the staff and faculty members are friendly and approachable, they try their best to make the subject as interesting as possible. The exams are really well designed too.
Other: A lot of events and extracurricular activities. The college life of my dreams.

IISER Kolkata Placement FAQs

Q:   Which has better placement at IISER Kolkata, B.Sc in biological sciences or B.Sc in geological sciences?
A:

I do not have much data on this, But a few (4) of my seniors were placed in Dr. Reddy's lab with salaries around 9lpa.It being a Science institute, they have. A newly made placement cell. (because most of the students opt for higher education after the completion of their studies )Some students also go for government jobs. But as the institute has signed some MoU s with well established foreign institutes (with jku Austria, UDE in Germany, university of Pennsylvania in USA, RWTH Aachen in Germany to name a few)and the high standings in global rankings (placed 48th in young institutes contributing to quality research world-wide by nature, 2019)These factors contribute to a good enough background for a future PhD or MS in other countries. B.Sc in biological sciences is atop course in IISER Kolkata and has a better placement, having average package 7 LPA and higher package is approximately 14 to 15 LPA.

Q:   What was the highest package offered at IISER Kolkata?
A:

The highest package offered to students placed from IISER Kolkata is INR 12 LPA approximately. The Centre for Career Development, IISER Kolkata helps students in their career planning, career exploration, job search strategies, locating suitable job opportunities, internships, full-time employment etc. The main aim of the centre is to take care of IISER Kolkata placements. Its objective is to provide full-time job opportunities and internships in campus interviews to students who are seeking employment in the public or private sectors. Apart from recruitment objectives, the centre also aims for the overall development of the students to shape their careers so that they can be the best in their fields. According to the IISER Kolkata placement report for IISER Kolkata 2019-20, for undergraduate courses, out of 172 eligible students, 11 were offered jobs while 102 opted for higher studies. The median salary offered to students who have completed the undergraduate course at IISER Kolkata in 2019-20 was Rs. 7,00,000.

Q:   Does IISER Kolkata offer better placements than Presidency University, Kolkata?
A:

The median package offered was INR 6 LPA during placements 2021. However, the median package of INR 7 LPA was offered in 2021. The stats we got from this year's campus placements at IISER-B are highly varied. For instance, the highest package offered was around 10.5 - 11 LPA, whereas the lowest was around 5.5 - 6 LPA.

On the other hand Presidency University is a good college for physics Hons with great faculty members and good infrastructure. Placements: Physics is not a technical course, so there is no such placement in this course. However, it is the best course to go for higher studies. Students can get a chance to do their PhD from abroad. So placements in Presidency University is good as IISER on their equal terms.

Q:   How is the college life at IISER, Kolkata?
A:

In terms of academics, IISER Kolkata is good but not good as IISER Pune. First of all, major-minor thing is not that good, most of the people opt out of minor and only take major.

And this is really not true that IISERK is good in physics. There are few profs who are very reputed in thier field but most of the physics profs are on a similar level as other IISERs. Overall all the IISER have good research facilities. Also, most of the physics profs have huge ego. Don't know why. They mentally harass students on a regular basis.

* Coming to student life, IISERK campus is very far from the main kolkata city (almost 60 kms). And the transportation from campus to city is terrible. 1.5 hr journey in the local train is very difficult, you will not get any seat and you will be pushed from all sides. That is why, people go to kolkata rarely. As far as I know, pune is almost in the city. Rest things are fine.

Also I would like to mention about doing MS-Thesis project from outside of IISER Kolkata. Only two departments allow that here — Department of Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences. But a huge problem is convincing some profs from here to become Co-supervisor without whom one cannot do from outside. Profs don't want students to do thesis from outside, so they don't agree to become supervisor and knowingly destroy students career and laugh about it. I know people who got Project opportunity from institutes abroad but didn't got Co-supervisor from the IISER Kolkata. Many profs here enjoy mentally harassing students here. It's really tough to survive in labs here because they force students to work for more than 12 hours. it's exhausting and tiresome. even after that profs say things like you are * and don't know anything. they are extremely toxic. some profs use this situation to sexually exploit students. because their friends are the administrators so they get away doing all this bullshit. one would think that how can something like this can happen in premier institutes like IISER Kolkata but it happens a lot.

Q:   Which are the PGs and hostels available close to IISER, Kolkata?
A:

Hostels at IISER Kolkata

Institute has following three hostels in the permanent campus:

* The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Hall

* The Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Hall.                                                         * The Nivedita Hall

IISER Kolkata has three hostels. The hostel accommodations are quite good.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Hall (ICVS): It is an all-boys hostel for BS-MS students. This hostel is the closest to the lecture halls and research labs. You can get to the lecture halls within 2 minutes from this hostel.

ICVS has great facilities including high-speed internet, wash-rooms with geysers, washing machines on each floor. The hostel is under CCTV surveillance. However, there are no strict entering and exiting times specified.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB): NSCB has the same facilities as ICVS. It was also built at the same time. There are 2 wings for girls and 1 wing for boys. The boy’s and girl’s wings are separated by doors.

The main canteen is situated between NSCB and ICVS. The canteen is run by students. Below the main canteen, there are two stationary shops, xerox shops, saloons, and two refreshment shops.

Nivedita Hall: This hostel was built most recently. It is for the junior year BS-MS students. It has 2 wings for boys and 1 wing for girls. The wings are well-separated. It has all the facilities as the other two hostels. But there is poor ventilation.

It is close to the cricket ground, gym, badminton court, volleyball court. This hostel has its own canteen.

In the hostel, there are separate wings for Ph.D. and BS-MS students. Ph.D. students are allotted single rooms and BS-MS students are allotted double sharing accommodation. There are no hostel facilities for post-doctoral students.
