Established in 1998, Indus Institute of Hospitality & Culinary Arts (IIHCA Chennai) is India’s first and only hospitality training institute catering to training for potential cruise line employment. The institute has a placement record of 99 per cent. IIHCA was initially founded in Gurugram as India’s first culinary training institute for continental cuisine and then moved to Bengaluru in 2003. After this, it finally established itself in Chennai in 2010.
There are internationally experienced faculty members on-campus to teach the students. IIHCA also has a job placement cell that works for the campus recruitment process. The institute is managed by the senior cruise line and hotel professionals, who represent the expert cruise line courses faculty and impart their specialised job knowledge and skills.
The institute offers total five courses under the streams of Culinary Arts, Hotel/ Hospitality Management and Catering. These courses include BSc in Culinary Arts & Chef Management, Diploma in Professional Cookery and Craftsmanship Courses in Bakery & Confectionery, Food & Beverage Service and Housekeeping. IIHCA Chennai Admission Process
To apply for any of the courses offered by IIHCA, candidates need to register online by filling a simple form, which is available on the official website of the institute and submit it. Candidates need not take an exam or test for admissions.
For all courses
- Fill in the registration form through the institute's website
- Once registered, a unique registration ID is sent to the candidates over e-mail
- After reviewing the application details, if candidates' details are found suitable for a cruise line course, they are contacted by the institute for further process
- In case the candidates do not get any call or response from IIHCA, it might mean that they do not meet the requested cruise line criteria and hence the application is not considered or accepted for admission
IIHCA Chennai Courses
The institute offers five courses at UG level. The minimum and maximum age criteria of a candidate while applying for a course is different. Also, the courses have different collaborations and affiliations associated with them. Here are some course-wise highlights tabulated below:
- BSc course is in collaboration with Alagappa University and to apply to this course, the age limit is 17-26 years
- Diploma Course in Professional Cookery is affiliated to Bharat Sevak Samaj (BSS) and the age limit to apply to this course is 17-26 years
- For Craftsmanship Course in Bakery & Confectionery, the age limit is 17-28 years
- And for Craftsmanship Course in Food & Beverage Service and Housekeeping, the age limit is 18-28 years

IIHCA Chennai Short Term Courses
The institute also offers short term courses, which are of five to 12-week duration and are cruise oriented. The batches run throughout the year for those with prior hospitality qualifications or experience.
- Freshers are also accepted for admission in exceptional cases
- The common communication language on the cruise is English only and hence all the courses are conducted in English medium
- Candidates must ensure that they have good command over English and can understand and speak well in this language

Institute likes to help the meritorious and the deserving students by offering financial aid for courses.
Two “Capt. D. C. Mitter Merit Awards” with a value of Rs. 50,000 each will be awarded to two top students from the combined Diploma courses. They are performance-based cash awards whose recipients will be chosen at the end of the course purely on the basis of their scores on performance (40% weightage), progress (30% weightage) and potential (30% weightage). By giving a higher combined weightage to progress and potential, Indus is giving an even chance to everybody to win these awards, not just to the naturally better skilled or educated.
In addition, as a financial incentive, Merit Awards of Rs.3000 – 5000 are given to the one student in each batch who shows the most effort and progress, irrespective of his or her standing in the final exams.
