The International Maritime Institute (IMI) admission process includes an entrance exam qualification, medical fitness, selection, and admission confirmation. Below are the steps to get a seat in the International Maritime Institute for 2025:
STEP 1: International Maritime Institute Application Process 2025
The application to the International Maritime Institute can only be made online on the official site of the organisation. They have to sign up and attend IMU- CET or other entrance examinations, depending on the course. The candidates must make sure that they are found to be eligible course course-wise such as education qualification, age limit, fluency in the English language. There is a requirement to submit documents and a valid certificate on medical fitness, which has been approved by DG Shipping.
STEP 2: Selection and Evaluation
The next stage will involve shortlisted applicants followed by a written test, an interview or straightforward selection to the posts based on the marks scored in the entrance examinations. IMI considers academic qualifications, performance of the candidate in the entrance examination and medical standards of every candidate. Some of the courses, such as DNS may also need sponsorship and one will need to pass through the selection process at the sponsoring company.
STEP 3: Medical Examination
Medical examination corresponding to the DG Shipping norms is mandatory for all candidates whose work will be carried out by the doctor authorised by the Directorate. The vision is tested along with hearing and physical well-being according to the ILO Convention 147 Seafarer Medical Examination. Applicants who fail medical examination will not qualify for the next stage.
STEP 4: Admission Confirmation
Once selected, candidates will receive an admission offer from the International Maritime Institute. To confirm their seat, candidates must pay the admission fee within the given deadline. After fee payment, students are enrolled on their chosen pre-sea training course, which begins in August or September. Finally, pay the International Maritime Institute fee for admission confirmation.

- Cass 12 ('A' levels) with a minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or BSc graduates with 60% aggregate in the final year. A minimum 50% aggregate in English in Class 10 or 12 is a must. Fluency in written and spoken English required
- Age limit: Maximum 25 years on the date of training commencement.
- Medical requirement: Medically fit with eyesight 6/6 with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No color blindness.

International Maritime Institute offers multiple post sea courses, which can be pursued by any maritime professional with prior sea-service experience. These courses are recognised by the Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW).
