Marine Engineering could be quite complex to study but then again, what is known about it is not necessarily harder than other types of engineering. The core curriculum is not significantly different from most other engineering fields and relies heavily on knowledge in Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanisms.
However, Marine Engineering includes additional challenges, for instance, hydrodynamics to visualize how fluids particularly water behaves around the moving vessels, corrosion which is a great concern in marine environment since vessels work in salty water, and many more skills about marine propulsion such as engines and propellers. Furthermore, Marine Engineering sometimes lays stress on the application, and the students acquire training in workshops or on ships through internships.
The BTech Marine Engineering syllabus includes both core subjects that are compulsory for you to study in every semester as well as a lot of elective subject choices that are given for your comfort so that you can take up subjects that interest you more and give you something to experiment. Some of the important subjects taught in classes are:
- Basic and Applied Thermodynamics
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- Material Science
- Engineering Mechanics
- Marine Machine Drawing
- Hydraulic Machines
- Ship Construction & Stability
- Marine Electrical Technology
- Ship Fire Prevention
- Seamanship, Navigation, and Survival at Sea
