Established in 1998, Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training, Chennai, also known as HIMT Chennai, is a private institute located in Kilpauk, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It has four campuses in Kilpauk, Tidel Park, Kalpakkam, and Vizag. HIMT is the only Institute in India to offer the maximum courses (90+) approved by the DG of Shipping. The institute is affiliated with the Indian Maritime University. The Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training offers full-time BTech and BSc courses with a duration of three to four years at the undergraduate level. Apart from UG courses, the institute also offers diploma, certificate, and other specialised courses in the fields of Marine Engineering and Nautical Science, including programmes such as IMEC Diploma in Nautical Science and IMEC Indian Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) Cadet Programme.

Rank 2: INR 3,000 - Female Candidate Scholarship: A waiver of INR 25,000 on the tuition fee is available for all female candidates enrolling in the HIMT pre-sea courses. Female Candidates can avail of an additional INR 1,00,000 discount from Maritime Training Trust (MTT), subject to their approval.
- Sports Scholarship: Students who have won a national-level prize would be offered a one-time scholarship of INR 10,000 in the course fees. Similarly, if any student has won a State-level prize will be offered a one-time scholarship of INR 5,000 in the course fees at the time of joining the course, or in the year in which they win the National or State-level prize.
- Life Long Scholarship: Seafarers need to regularly complete various modular courses, simulator-based courses, and revalidation courses every five years. To support this, HIMT offers loyalty discounts to candidates. The discount amount ranges from INR 500 to INR 3000 per course, depending on the number of courses completed at HIMT.
- Post-sea Course Fee Scholarship: All Pre-Sea Candidates of HIMT, after graduation, can avail the following alumni discounts, over and above the loyalty discount of upto 3,000. All D.G. Shipping Approved Courses (Apart from Refresher Courses) get a 5% discount on course fees paid.

Currently, the application process has concluded for the BSc course. In this college, candidates who qualify for IMU CET can register themselves for the admission process after the release of the IMU CET list. The application form usually starts in April/ May every academic year. For the academic batch of 2025, the last date to fill out the IMU CET application form was May 2, 2025.
IMU CET 2026 admit card was released, and the exam has been conducted. The admission authority released the IMU CET admit card online for eligible candidates. Candidates could download the IMU CET admit card by using their login credentials.

The Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training campus spreads across 20 acres of land. HIMT offers several facilities for its students. The facilities include separate hostels for boys and girls, well-furnished rooms and spacious classrooms, and full-time internet connectivity. In addition to this, the institute also offers medical and sports facilities to the students. The other facilities provided to the students of the institute include:

- Hostel: Being a fully residential programme, hostel facilities for the candidates consist of well-designed dormitories. Mattresses, pillow covers will be supplied to each cadet on the date of joining for their use during the training.
