Read the article below to check important tips for the good preparation of JEE Advanced Trigonometry.

JEE Advanced requires you to be smart in your preparation as well as in the way that you solve the exam paper. Even after knowing everything, a lot of aspirants mess things up during the exam either due to pressure or poor time management. One needs to know the set of chapters that should be attempted first. Time management should be done very carefully in mathematics especially because the paper is generally lengthy or too tough, but scoring at the same time. Trigonometry is one such chapter that can possibly fetch you easy marks if done with proper logic and care. You can attempt questions from this chapter earlier and also, do try option elimination first when you see the questions from trigonometry.

Classifications in Trigonometry

Trigonometry consists of a few broad topics. They are generally given as separate chapters in almost all books of JEE Advanced mathematics, or trigonometry specifically. These topics are:

  1. Trigonometric functions and identities: This chapter consists of the basic trigonometric functions, their curves and their applications. The chapter explains all the identities formed with these functions along with their applications. It is the first step to understanding trigonometry, and finally using it to solve complex problems.
  2. Trigonometric equations: This chapter involves solving trigonometric equations. The chapter consists of the general solutions to all the trigonometric functions. Problems in this chapter are a bit tricky at times.
  3. Heights and Distances: This chapter is a small one but consists of the actual application of all that you learn in the above two chapters. This chapter has word problems that are interesting to solve and can be easily correlated with real-life scenarios.
  4. Inverse Trigonometric functions: This chapter is very different from the above chapters and forms a larger part of trigonometry. It consists of the inverse of the functions that were taught to you in the first lesson. Problems in this chapter are asked frequently in JEE.
  5. Solutions and Properties of Triangles: This chapter has a lot of properties that you would need to remember, and for this reason, the chapter gets very complicated at times. The chapter involves the application of concepts that you learned in the basic chapters of trigonometry. Do stick to the syllabus while you study this chapter as studying excessive properties might make you forget the useful ones.

  1. Cengage Mathematics: The unit-wise trigonometry book by Cengage is a good option for preparing for JEE since it consists of a good detailed theory and explanations of concepts. There are various solved examples too to teach you concept application. Finally, there is a great mix of problems at the end of each chapter to help you enhance your knowledge. The book is a complete package to help you in learning trigonometry for JEE.
  2. Arihant Mathematics: The trigonometry book by Arihant is pretty similar to Cengage but it is slightly better in terms of explanation of the theory and solved examples. The number of questions might be slightly lesser but the overall impact of the book is good and you can use it to deeply understand concepts of trigonometry.

You can choose either of the above-mentioned books to strengthen your concepts of trigonometry. You should start with a basic boards-level book like RD Sharma or ML Aggarwal to get a good idea of the basics and then you can move on to either of the above books to take it to an advanced level.

Q:   How many months are required to prepare for JEE Mains exam?
A:

The time period required to complete the JEE Main preparation depends mainly on the students. Every student has their own pace of study. Ideally, 6-month time is good enough to complete the JEE Main preparation. Students who have started preparing from class 11 or 12 can easily prepare for JEE Main in 6 months considering the topics of JEE syllabus have already been studied in classes 11 and 12.

JEE Main preparation is most effective with classes 11 and 12 as almost 90-95 percent of topics are similar in both exams. This way students can easily complete the entire JEE Main syllabus as well as the syllabus of classes 11 and 12. After the board exams, students get 1-2 months' time where they can focus entirely on JEE Main. Students who have started late for the JEE Main exam can make a 6-month plan where in the first three months they have to focus on revising the syllabus studied in classes 11 and 12. In the next two months focus on solving questions of JEE Main and analyzing the mistakes being made, if any. The last month should be focused on solving mock tests and JEE Main previous year question papers.

Q:   How to crack JEE Mains in first attempt?
A:

Clearing the JEE Main exam in first attempt is not a difficult task. Several students clear JEE Main while in class 12. One thing that makes it easy to clear JEE Main with class 12 is that students are in regular touch of most JEE syllabus. To score good marks in JEE Main in the first attempt, it is advised that you study class 11 and 12 topics thoroughly, clear all the concepts and solve mock test papers. Also, NCERT books which you study in class 11 and 12 are the best books for JEE Main preparation. Students must study NCERT properly and solve all the questions in the book and do not memorize the concepts as some students do rather understand the concepts.

Q:   How should I prepare for JEE Mains and Advanced together?
A:
Students can prepare for both Mains and Advanced together but it is not a wise idea to prepare together as both exams have different syllabus, exam pattern and difficulty level. The difficulty level of JEE Advanced exam is much higher than JEE Mains. If preparing together for both the exams, make a list of topics that are asked in JEE Main as well as Advanced. Solve questions from these topics from NCERT as well as additional books. For JEE Mains, students can stick to NCERT but for JEE Advanced students need to take help from books like HC Verma.

You should start with basic theory and then do a lot of solved examples in order to understand concept application. Once that is done, do a lot of JEE Main level problems to gain confidence and command over the topic. Do the chapters in the order given in the book. Once you are done with the Main level problems, do a good number of JEE Advanced level problems of varying types. Don’t let any doubt remain in your mind and clear all the doubts with your teachers. You must know the curves of all the trigonometric as well as the inverse trigonometric functions. You should know the transformations that can be applied in the same. Remembering formulas is of utmost importance in trigonometry. You can note down the formulas in one place and then see them on a weekly basis to keep them in your mind always.

Here are a few tips that will help you in preparing trigonometry in the best possible way:

  1. Remember that you must complete all the chapters of this unit as this unit will fetch you some easy marks and that too in less time.
  2. Once you are done with the theory and numerical you must do the previous year’s questions. With the previous year questions you would totally understand where you are lacking and you will be able to improve accordingly.
  3. Do question sets from the chapter in a time-bound manner to increase your speed and accuracy. This activity will especially help you in JEE Mains.
  4. While doing mock tests make sure to check and eliminate options first and when you find questions from a solution of triangles in the exam remember to try the question by assuming the triangle to be equilateral or isosceles. Also, do the questions from trigonometry at the end as they won’t take much time and you would feel relaxed at the end of the paper. If you leave lengthy questions for the end you might panic and ruin the exam.
  5. Don’t do unnecessary things and stick to the syllabus while preparing trigonometry. A number of books give a lot of useless topics too which aren’t really a part of JEE.

By following the above books and tips you would be able to prepare trigonometry for JEE Advanced in a very nice way. Don’t make silly mistakes and this unit will surely boost your JEE Advanced mathematics score. Practice well and don’t skip any chapter from this unit. All the best!
