IIT Bombay Highlights 2025
Established in 1958, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is also known as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai. IIT Bombay has been declared a 'Deemed University' and is autonomous. IITB is the first public college to have laid its foundation stone with assistance from UNESCO. The institute has also been declared an Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India in 1961. IIT Bombay has been conferred the status of Institute of Eminence by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development in July 2018.
IIT Bombay offers degree and dual degree courses at UG, PG and PhD levels across Engineering, Science, and Management streams. The flagship courses at IITB include BTech, MTech, and MBA. IIT Bombay has recently launched 2 professional certificate programmes, namely, Professional Certificate in Software Development and Professional Certificate in Cybersecurity. Further, the institute also offers interdisciplinary programmes and short-term and distance learning courses.
The institute has 17 academic departments, 30+ centers, and 3 schools to offer more than 80 courses. The average and median packages offered during IIT Bombay placements 2024 stood at INR 23.5 LPA and INR 17.92 LPA, respectively. The overall placement rate recorded during IIT Bombay placements 2024 was 74.53% with 1,475 students participating in the process out of 1,979 students. A total of 930 students registered, 819 students participated and 683 students were placed durinng BTech placements 2024. The placement percentage went this low because of minimal or no participation in the placement process from over 400 students. Most of them went for higher studies, such as MS / MTech / PhD and MBA courses, while many opted for entrepreneurship or civil services.
IIT Bombay offers BTech course in different specialisations and as an integrated programme. Its fee structure is cumulative of various components, such as tuition fees, caution money, and more. Students who get a seat allocated in the counselling have to pay the required fee amount. IIT Bombay BTech tuition fees range from INR 8 Lacs to INR 10 lakh. IIT Bombay MBA is a two-year course spread across eight terms. In the first year, students acquire knowledge on all the disciplines of management through 23 rigorous courses. All the academic courses need case studies, course projects and research by students, which provide exposure to the latest practices in the Industry. Students have the option of doing a one-month winter project at the end of first two terms.

Yes, GATE score is required to get admission to IIT Bombay course. However, aspirants who have not qualified GATE can also get admission based on written test conducted by the institute. The shortlisted candidates are further called for a personal interview round. IIT Bombay accepts UCEED scores for admisison to the B.Des course. The round 2 cutoff has been released. As per the cutoff list, the round 2 closing rank for B.Des was 14 for the General AII India category candidates. Durign the IIT Bombay UCEED cutoff 2023 the last round cutoff closed at 16, it means candidates scoring 50 in UCEED will not be eligible to get into IIT Bombay for B.Des admission. With a cutoff range of 50 to 80, candidates can choose IIT Hyderabad and IIT Guwahati for admission to the B.Des course.
IIT Bombay admission to all the courses is entrance-based (Except for EMBA, where admission is merit-based and performance in the interview round). The IIT Bombay admission process includes the application process, selection round, cutoff, merit list or counselling and other steps. For BTech, candidates have to clear JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Further for other courses such as MTech, MBA, MSc, BDes, and MDes, aspirants need to clear GATE, CAT, IITJAM, UCEED, and CEED, respectively to qualify for further admission rounds.
The dates for JoSAA counselling 2026 choice filling will be announced once the result of JEE Main 2026 is declared. Candidates can fill choices only during the choice filling period. Also, candidates need to lock their choices before the last date.

Yes, IIT Bombay offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to UG students. It is awarded to a maximum of 25% of sanctioned intake. For Dual degree, it is available only up to fourth year.
Merit Criterion: For new entrants of BDes their UCEED Rank, will be the criterion. In subsequent years, the criterion will be their academic performance during the preceding academic year.
Means Criterion: The parental income is the basis for the ‘means' criterion of the scholarship. At present, students with parents annual gross income from all sources for the previous Financial year does not exceed INR 5 Lacs are eligible to apply for Merit cum Means Scholarship.

IIT Bombay offers BDes through IDC School of Design at the UG level. It is a four-year course divided into eight semesters. IIT Bombay admission to MDes programme is entrance-based. Candidates have to follow the below steps to get a seat in the MDes programme:
Step 1: Candidates meeting the eligibility requirements have to pay an application fee to register for MDes course.
Step 2: IIT Bombay selects candidates for MDes programme based on CEED score. After qualifying CEED, the institute releases a category-wise merit list for each stream. Eligible candidates are required to appear for an IDC (written test) and an interview round.
Step 3: After the completion of the selection rounds, IITB releases a final merit list. Selected candidates will then have to appear for the verification of documents in order to complete the admission.

The total tuition fee for IIT Bombay MDes is INR 1 Lacs as per an unofficial source. Students belonging to SC/ ST/ PwD category or a child of institution staff are exempted from paying the tuition fee. There is a concessional and a non-concessional fee for candidates belonging to General/ EWS/ OBC-NCL category. The concessional is offered on tuition fee. Candidates apart from the tuition fee are required to pay examination fee, medical fee, etc. Students not staying in hostel are exempted from the payment of hostel fee.
