Group Discussion is not just an important part of the recruitment process but also equally important for a student’s development.

Group Discussion or GD is a very important part of skill assessment during any placement process. Group Discussion follows a unique pattern to allow students to speak up and even work as a team. This enriches a student’s ability to present his/her confidence with knowledge and talent. Group Discussion not only presents confidence in oneself but also allows a student to float his message to a team with relevant examples. This allows the recruiter to test a student’s ability to attract customers or guests in a company. While GD is an important part of the recruitment process, it is also equally important for a student’s development.

Skills required for GD

To develop the best out of you and present the best of yourself to the recruiters, there are a few key points to remember. Certain skills would allow you to pass the Group Discussion assessment or even prepare you for the future. Maintaining those skills throughout with consistency is another major aspect of a good person. Further, these skills help in the improvement of a student’s personality not only in the recruitment process but in the outer world too. These skills involve:

Communication Skills

Leadership Skills

Teaming Skills

Attitude of Tolerance

Motivational Skills

Thinking on a wider note

Active Listening

Better Clarity of Things

Presentation Skills

Logical/Analytical skills

Interpersonal Skills

On what basis is the overall performance judged?

The evaluation of GD performance is done basically on five main parameters. These parameters include:

  1. Contribution of a student towards the GD: This is the most important parameter for the evaluation of the GD performance. Well, one must participate in the discussion and keep their opinions or point of view even if they know about the facts and figures very well or not. This will get the attention of the recruiter towards the student while also knowing of his/her ability to speak.
  2. Initiative Taken: After contributing in a discussion about the given topic, the next important thing is to try to take the initiative to stand out the crowd. The student must try to give a valid opinion with better points in mind as an initiative to work things well for him/her. Moreover, this will help the student to follow the confidence and represent the clarity of thoughts to the recruiters.
  3. Communication Roles: Next thing to keep in mind is the communication process. Everyone knows “First impression is the last impression.” GD is the opportunity to present your impression in front of the recruiters and communication is one of the factor to place an impression. So one must try to represent himself/herself with better words and focus on making better communication with the whole team present there.
  4. Persuasion Roles: This skill is important to check the leadership skills of a student. One must focus on persuading other students to speak and represent their thoughts while including them in the your conversation. Moreover, the students must try to persuade other participants to work out the discussions.
  5. Knowing the Dynamics: This skill is important to know the balance of the student between leadership, group discussion, teamwork and individual response.
