The government of Karnataka has announced its decision to shut schools for Classes 1 to 9 in Bengaluru until January 31. The government has taken this decision considering the increasing number of novel coronavirus cases. However, classes for students of 10th and12th will continue and the decision on this will be taken after recommendations of the technical committee.

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai tested positive for COVID-19 and he conducted a virtual meeting in which he authorised DCs of the respective districts to take a call on closing the schools on the basis of the number of cases.

The closure of all schools and colleges of Bengaluru except for schools for Classes 10 to 12 and Nursing, Medical, Paramedical colleges until mid of January was already announced by the state earlier. However, now, the government has extended the date and announced that the schools will remain closed until January end.

Taking measured to curb COVID-19 spread in the state, Karnataka has also announced vaccination plans for children of the age group of 15-18 years. The government is ensuring to vaccinate maximum children with at least 1 dose by the end of January 2022. 

Meanwhile, Karnataka has reported 21,390 fresh cases on January 11 and the state is witnessing an exponential surge in the number of cases. So far, the state has a total of 93, 099 active cases and the positivity rate remains 10.96%. Bengaluru crossed over 10,000 cases and that's why the administration decided to gear up the protocols and precautions against COVID-19.
