In a move to boost digital access and learning outcomes among government school students, the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi has announced that it will distribute high-end i7 laptops to 1,200 students who passed Class 10. The announcement was made via the official X handle of the Director of Education, under the Chief Minister Digital Education Scheme, which aims to bridge the digital divide in the public school system.
As per the details shared, these laptops will be equipped with Intel Core i7 processors—known for their high performance and multitasking capabilities. The initiative is targeted at meritorious or eligible students from Delhi government schools, with the aim of supporting their academic journey as they move into higher secondary education and prepare for competitive exams. The government believes that access to such devices will empower students to participate effectively in online classes, access digital study resources, practice coding, and explore research-oriented projects from home.
Officials have emphasized that this step is part of a broader vision to ensure that socio-economic barriers do not restrict students' educational potential. With growing reliance on digital platforms in both classrooms and at home, the provision of powerful laptops is expected to help government school students stay at par with their peers in private institutions. While the Directorate has not yet shared detailed selection criteria or timelines for distribution, the announcement indicates that the laptops will likely be handed out before the start of the new academic session.
The move has been widely appreciated by education advocates, calling it a progressive step toward building digital equity in the capital's education system. It is expected that similar schemes may be extended to other classes in the future if the initiative proves successful. More clarity is awaited on training, technical support, and safeguards to ensure proper usage and longevity of the laptops.
