The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are promoting entrepreneurship and start-up ecosystem to help its students. The IIMs are also working closely with the industry to help budding entrepreneurs. Speaking at the ‘Education Innovation and Skill Summit’ organised by ET Government heads of leading higher education institutions discussed measures to promote innovations and research and create an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country.

While talking about how IIM Bangalore is contributing to empowering innovations and the entrepreneurship ecosystem, Professor Rishikesha T Krishnan said, “Things have really changed in last 6-7 years. We have a vibrant innovation ecosystem centred on our incubator at NS Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL). We are playing a role on multiple bases. We run a lot of impactful entrepreneurial education programmes. We are involved with Goldman Sachs ten thousand women entrepreneurial programme.

Talking about the women start-up programme, Krishnan said that IIM Bangalore is running it with the National Commission for Women. “Last year we ran a programme to help six thousand women entrepreneurs to get their enterprises on the run. Over the period, we have got focused women entrepreneurship sector and apart from that, now we have focused initiatives in technologies like fintech, mobilities, etc,” Krishnan said. Speaking on the same lines, IIM Indore director Himanshu Rai added that in order to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, we have converted our incubation centre into a section-8 company known as IIM Indore Incubation foundation. With this going forward we can attract funds and seek projects based on the ideas that our students have. The director further talked about IIM Indore’s MoU with IIT Indore and their plan of going forward with joint incubation. Talking about IIM Indore’s strong MSME presence, Rai said that the institute is strengthening its General Management programme for executives for the entrepreneurs from this MSME section.

Directors from both IIMs and IITs also discussed possibilities of innovation promoting economic growth.
