AICTE, ISRO, IIT Bombay to organise online mapathon to promote use of Indian Satellite imagery

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISER), and Free Open Source Software in Education will be conducting an online mapathon to promote the usage of the Indian Satellite Imagery and other educational tools for the development of Resource maps. The marathon will be conducted in association with the Ministry of Education.
Students interested to apply can visit the official website of Mapathon to complete the application. The application forms are also available on the official website - iitb-isro-aicte-mapathon.fossee.in. Students must note that they need to complete the registrations for the mapathon will be conducted from December 4 to 18, 2020. The applications have to be submitted online from December 14 to 31, 2020 and the results of the Mapathon will be released from January 4 to 10, 2021. The students participating in the Mapathon will also receive certificates jointly issued by the AICTE, IIT Bombay, ISRO, and FOSSE.
"It is being conducted to sensitize the public about the potential of ISRO data for different uses which include tracking natural calamities, floods, droughts, crop failure, soil fertility assessments, water and cropping area," the statement said.
While speaking about the ISRO maps, IIT Bombay Director Subhasis Chaudhuri said that even though the Indian government agencies are using the ISRO maps as an important tool for resource analysis most of the maps are not made by common citizens which lacks comprehensive usage.
"The maps are also expected to have crucial applications in climate change, adaptation, education, logistics, natural resource management, disaster management, health, geography, forest management, socio-economic factors, and local administration," the statement said.
