IGNOU BTech degrees earned before 2011-12 are valid: AICTE clarifies
The AICTE clearly stated that the Council has no objection to the degree awarded to candidates enrolled up to the academic session 2011-12.
IGNOU BTech Degrees Valid: The technical education regulator, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) again issued a clarification over the validity of BTech degrees awarded by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). IGNOU offered this course through distance education mode until 2011-12. After receiving inquiries related to the validity of the BTech degree offered by IGNOU, the AICTE has issued the circular. The AICTE clearly stated that the Council has no objection to the degree awarded to candidates enrolled up to the academic session 2011-12.
IGNOU was offering BTech courses through ODL mode. The distance course for BTech led to litigation as engineering cannot be offered in distance mode. Later in 2018, Supreme Court approved the degrees awarded by IGNOU for students enrolled until 2009-10 and later extended that relief to students who enrolled until 2011-12. However, after the same, the open university stopped offering BTech in distance mode. Following the judgment released by the apex court, AICTE also approved the degrees awarded to students who were enrolled until 2011-12. An official circular released by the AICTE reads: “AICTE has no objection for B.Tech. Degree/Diploma in Engineering awarded by IGNOU to the students who were enrolled up to the academic year 2011-12 with IGNOU as per Supreme Court Judgement and hence are treated as valid as a special case but cannot be taken as precedence and not for post-2012.”
Meanwhile, IGNOU commenced the re-registration process for January 2021 cycle. Candidates interested in IGNOU Admissions 2020 can visit the official website of the Open University, i.e. https://ignou.samarth.edu.in to complete the registration process.
