IIT Kharagpur alumnus develops robots to sanitise train coaches, hospitals, and other establishments amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur alumnus Ajit Kumar has developed a Remote Navigated Ultraviolet Robot (RNUR) that can help in sanitizing the train coaches, hospitals and other establishments amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The RNUR is equipped with the detection camera to sanitise the train coaches, hospitals, nursing homes, shopping malls, multiplexes and other large establishments. The prototype of RNUR, christened โ€˜Coronav Yodha UV Sanitiser Robotโ€™ had been supplied to the South East Central Railway (SECR), Raipur, for trail and testing in May. The developer Ajit said that he has received a letter from Ram Narayan Sahu, Senior coaching depot officer, SECR, and showed keen interest in using RNUR to fight coronavirus.

โ€œSo far, SECR, some shopping malls, and other establishments, as well as NTPCโ€™s Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station (KhSTPS), have evinced interest in RNUR,โ€ he said.

โ€œThe production cost of RNUR is Rs 25,000. It can sanitise every corner of train coaches and any establishment. State Education Minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma has also expressed interest to establish competency learning platform using the technologies developed by the team in schools after RNUR was shown to him recently,โ€ he said.
