JNU hikes fees for academic year 2020-21
Not just the semester enrolment fees but the academic institution has also increased its one-time medical fee from Rs 9 to Rs 1,000.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has raised its fee more than three times for prospective students enrolling for the academic year 2020-21. Not just the semester enrolment fees but the academic institution has also increased its one-time medical fee from Rs 9 to Rs 1,000. Last year, per semester fees for MPhil and PhD students, was Rs 295 but in this new academic year, JNU has raised the fees to Rs 780 per semester. Similarly, the university has also raised the fees of undergraduate and postgraduate students from Rs 283 per semester in 2019-20 to Rs 768 per semester for the academic session 2020-21. All the mentioned figures are exclusive of GST.
Talking about the medical and academic fees hike JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh stated that there is an evident fee hike and the student union is formulating strategies as of now regarding the same. She further added that the union won’t take it lying down.
The university has imposed the hikes when JNU Students’ Union is already fighting a case in the Delhi High Court against the hostel fee hike. JNUSU decided to take the help of the court after doing months of protests in and outside the university. The strikes forced the Ministry of Human Resource Development to intervene and hold meetings.
Earlier, when JNUSU did protests against hostel fee hike, JNU administration reasoned that the fee was not revised for 19 years. The university also introduced a few new charges like service charges of Rs 1,700 per month that never existed before. However, the university has not given any official statement in regards to this statement.
