The private member’s bill will give states the choice to opt out of NEET for admissions into medical courses.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson moved a private member’s bill to amend the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and Dentists Act, 1948, to give states the choice to opt out of the (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) NEET for admission to medical and dental courses.

As per a report published in The New Indian Express, the bill named ‘The Medical Education Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021’ says it has been felt across the country that NEET not only gives students studying in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools an upper hand but also greatly disadvantages the economically weaker sections of the society.

Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed the bill to scrap the NEET and provide admission on the basis of Class XII marks to ensure social justice in September this year. The decision was taken after a 19-year-old medical aspirant had allegedly committed suicide in Tamil Nadu.

The government had said that it was to protect the vulnerable student communities. The state government had undertaken a detailed study on the impact of NEET and how it adversely affected the candidates from weaker sections of society. The government also opined that the affluent students mostly preferred pursuing higher courses from abroad rather than opting to serve in the rural areas which couls lead to further shortage of doctors in rural areas of the state.
