50% Teaching posts vacant in IIITs
IITs and IIMs have around one third faculty posts lying vacant.
Nearly 50 percent of teaching posts in the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) are lying vacant. The situation at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is slightly better than IIITs with around one-third of faculty positions vacant.
There are a total of 25 IIITs in India, five of which are listed as the Institutes of National Importance (INIs) while the remaining 21 IIITs are set up on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Out of 23 IITs, as many as 3230 teaching posts are lying vacant. There are 10,088 sanctioned teaching posts in IITs of which there are 6858 posts filled.
In the case of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) out of 1404 sectioned posts, 1001 are filled while 403 are lying vacant. The IITs, IIMs, IIITs and central universities are institutions of national importance and are run by the central government.
Dr Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education shared details of the number of total faculties, total sanctioned posts, the number of posts filled and vacant posts in IITs, IIMs and IIITs in the Rajya Sabha.
While replying to a similar question in Lok Sabha last week, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that around 10,000 teaching posts were lying vacant in central universities, IITs and IIMs. He stated that 6,535 full-time teaching posts were vacant in the central universities, 3,876 in the 23 IITs and 403 in 20 IIMs.
