Aspirants Approach Supreme Court Challenging the Relaxed JEE Advanced 2022 Eligibility

IIT aspirants who have appeared in JEE Advanced both in 2021 & 2020 approached Supreme Court for another chance to appear in JEE Advanced 2022.

Aspirants move SC to challenge the relaxation in JEE Advanced 2022 eligibility criteria

As per the relaxed eligibility criteria of JEE Advanced 2020, candidates who have appeared in JEE Advanced in 2020 and 2021 are ineligible for JEE Advanced 2022. One time relaxation is provided only to those candidates who first appeared in class 12th in 2020  and have appeared only once for JEE (Advanced), either in the year 2020 or 2021; or, have not at all appeared in any paper in both JEE (Advanced) 2020 and JEE (Advanced) 2021.

Challenging this relaxation aspirants have moved to SC. Joint Admission Board granted relaxation to the students of the 2020 batch for JEE Adavnacde 2022 via official notice dated December 30, 2021.

What does the plea state?

The plea stated that "Now in the present case there are no changes in circumstances under which relaxation is being given to the students who failed to qualify the preliminary exam - JEE(Main) and by default could not sit for JEE(Advanced); and to those who did qualify JEE(Main) but did not register for JEE(Advanced); and to those who did not even register for JEE(Main) in the 1st place but such relaxation is being denied to the petitioners herein who qualified JEE(Main) both times and appeared in JEE(Advanced) both times in 2020 and 2021 under same circumstances."

What is the JEE Advanced 2022 eligibility criteria that has been challenged?

The JEE Advanced 2022 eligibility notice dated December 30 states:

“As a one-time special measure due to the ongoing pandemic, candidates who appeared in class 12th (or equivalent) examination in 2020 for the first time are also eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) 2022 PROVIDED they satisfy the following two criteria simultaneously: 

• The candidate should have appeared ONLY ONCE for JEE (Advanced), either in the year 2020 or 2021; OR, have NOT at all appeared in any paper in both JEE (Advanced) 2020 and JEE (Advanced) 2021.

• These candidate(s) should appear/should have appeared in JEE (Main) 2022 and meet the cut-off score of the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) for qualifying for JEE (Advanced) 2022 in their respective category.” 

The notice makes it clear that no candidate will be allowed to appear in JEE Advanced more than two times.
