IIT Bhubaneshwar develops technology to conduct online exams, uses a virtual examination hall with actual invigilators
IIT Bhubaneswar has created a state-of-the-art method for conducting online exams in a total comprehensive manner while plugging the loopholes in existing systems.
With several colleges, universities, and educational institutions around the country opting for online exams, the need for improvement in technology has become the need of the hour. Keeping this in mind, IIT Bhubaneswar has created a state-of-the-art method for conducting online exams in a total comprehensive manner while plugging the loopholes in existing systems.
The method developed by IIT Bhubaneswar can be utilized for holding all kinds of exams, like a class test or end-semesters exams of an institute. The method used by the institute is the currently available commercial systems such as the Wheebox.
The IIT Bhubaneswar claimed that by using the technology developed by them, the institutes will be able to overcome the major limitations of holding only computer-based tests, reliability of invigilation, and connection problems faced by the commercially available online examination systems.
RV Raja Kumar, Director, IIT-Bhubaneswar said, โ the proposed online examination system is robust and can be used for holding tests of wide-ranging nature from simple computer-based ones to detailed conventional examinations.โ
This system uses a virtual examination hall with actual invigilators, online distribution of question paper, and submission/reception of soft copies of answer books which may be printed if needed. It uses two or more network connections to ensure the reliability of the connection and additional facility for proctoring reliable evaluation and invigilation.
โUnlike in systems where a student has to come to an examination center equipped with computers, in the proposed system, a student can take the examination from home or anywhere across the globe,โ Kumar informed.
The institute has tested the entire system successfully. It held a mock test involving about 240 students who are stationed across the country with question papers of 31 subjects and 20 invigilators. It was then assured that exams can be held successfully as long a student has at least one of the two connections working at any time between the exam.
