IIT Roorkee Hosts National Dialogue on Natural Hazards

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, through its Department of Earth Sciences and in collaboration with the Himalayan Society of Geoscientists, organised a one-day national workshop on “Natural Hazards in the Himalaya.” The event convened leading geoscientists, industry experts, policymakers, and academicians to discuss the pressing need for integrated approaches to address and mitigate the growing geohazard risks in the Himalayan region.

The Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Roorkee is a recognised centre of excellence in Earth systems and natural hazard research. Leveraging a multidisciplinary approach, the department is committed to tackling the complex geological and geomorphological challenges of the Himalayan region. Its research encompasses key areas such as earthquake engineering, geohazards, climate change, environmental geology, and sustainable infrastructure design. With state-of-the-art facilities and a strong research ethos, the department plays a critical role in advancing both fundamental and applied knowledge to support effective disaster mitigation strategies in high-risk zones like the Himalayas.

The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, Prof. T. N. Singh, Director of IIT Patna, who underscored the crucial role of geosciences in national development and disaster resilience. He was joined by Prof. Sandeep Singh (Head, Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Roorkee), Shri B. D. Patni (Vice President, HSG), Prof. K. K. Pandey (Joint Secretary, HSG), and Prof. S. P. Pradhan (Organising Secretary). Together, the speakers emphasised the need for collaborative research, policy-driven initiatives, and the integration of technology to enhance disaster resilience and safeguard the Himalayan region.

Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, in a message shared for the occasion, stated, “As a national leader in engineering research and education, IIT Roorkee is committed to applying scientific knowledge to societal challenges. This workshop reflects our continued efforts to build resilience in hazard-prone regions through advanced research, innovation, and stakeholder collaboration.”

Later in the day, a panel discussion centred on promoting an interdisciplinary approach to disaster management in the Himalayas. Experts explored the roles of satellite monitoring, community preparedness, and the integration of artificial intelligence in hazard prediction. The panellists advocated for stronger collaboration between academia, government agencies, and the private sector to improve disaster response capabilities and bolster infrastructure resilience in the region.
