NIRF Rankings 2025: IIT Madras Tops Engineering for 10th Year; IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay Follow

The IIT Madras has secured Rank 1 in the NIRF Engineering Rankings 2025 for the 10th consecutive year. IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay have retained their places at Rank 2 and 3. Check Top 10 of NIRF Rankings, 2022–25 comparison, and IITM’s latest achievements.

The NIRF India Rankings 2025 has been released by the Ministry of Education today, which is also the 10th edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings. The Ranking covers 17 categories of higher education streams. In the Engineering category of NIRF Rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has yet again emerged as the undisputed leader, securing Rank 1 for the 10th consecutive year. It is followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay at second and third places respectively.

IIT Madras Celebrates a Decade of Excellence

According to a press release issued by IIT Madras, the institute is celebrating its 10th straight year at Rank 1 in Engineering and its 7th year at Rank 1 in Overall category. The IIT Madras release noted that the institute has also secured the top position in the Innovation category, moved to the top in the newly introduced Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) category, and retained Rank 2 among Research Institutions, just behind the IISc Bengaluru.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, credited the institutes's achievement to a collective effort: “Being a topper consistently is a result of a collective, cohesive and focused team effort. Together, we pledge to put in our best efforts towards Viksit Bharat@2047.”

IIT Madras has also been expanding its global footprint with the IITM Zanzibar campus, has improved its ranking in international rankings like the QS World University Rankings from 227 to 180, launched a School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and has incubated over 100 start-ups in 2024–25 while filing 417 patents, surpassing its ambitious “One Patent a Day” vision.
