Major Changes in IIT entrance examination have been recommended by CEP

The pattern in which IIT entrance exam is conducted in the country might experience a major overhaul in the coming future. The Committee of Eminent Persons (CEP), constituted by the IIT council, has proposed some key changes in entrance examination structure for the institutes.

JEE Main 2016 results out, check details!

One of the major decisions taken during the meet was regarding JEE. According to information, JEE 2016 will be held in the same manner as 2015. Also, the enhanced intake for the exam will be upped from 1.5 lakh to two lakh into the JEE Advanced stage.

Subsequently, changes in the structure of JEE will be introduced from 2017 onwards.

One of the most significant recommendations by the committee is that Board marks should not be counted to give rankings to students for admissions to NITs and Central Footwear Training Institutes.

The Committee, which is under the Chairmanship of Prof Ashok Misra, submitted the report to the Government on November 5. The proposed recommendations by the Committee have been put out in the public domain by the HRD Ministry for a better and wide consultation.

Take a look at the other recommendations proposed by the CEP:

  • Setting up a National Testing Service to hold exams on the basis of which around four lakh students will be shortlisted for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The Service would be set up by early 2016.
  • Once set up, the Testing Service would conduct an online Aptitude Test two or more times a year.
  • The Aptitude Test would examine the scientific aptitude and innovative thinking ability. It would not be "gamed through coaching”. The idea is to reduce the dependence of IIT aspirants on coaching institutes.
  • Through this test, as many four lakh candidates would be short-listed for taking JEE, which would be on the lines of the current JEE Advanced. The then JEE would test the knowledge in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and will be conducted by the IITs.
  • Once the JEE is conducted, ranks will be issued to 40,000+ students. These students can then seek admission to IITs and NITs based on a common counselling.
  • One of the recommendations also talks about setting up a system for developing mock JEE examinations which will help students prepare for the JEE significantly and will play a part in pulling students away from coaching students.

The new system for admissions should start from 2018 for the students who are studding in class 10th at present. The students who are studding in class 11th will prepare for the existing system as the new system is only recommendations and not final/approved. It will not be fair if minimum two year
