5 year BTech model with flexible exit options is the need of time. If implemented, this could be one of the most significant structural shifts in India's engineering education system. However, its success will likely hinge on how well institutions manage the cost and stigma concerns it raises.

Imagine a future where every child is encouraged to think critically, solve real world problems, and innovate rather than simply memorise facts. This is the vision behind the NEP 2020 idea of flexible, multi-exit option engineering program.

Should IITs Implement 5-Year B.Tech Model With Multiple Exit Options to Ease Student Pressure

The recent developments at IIT Bombay has raised a significant question for educationists and policymakers- Should IITs extend BTech Programs to 5 Years or make them flexible with multiple exit options to reduce academic pressure?

Former IIT-D Director V Ramgopal Rao has aso advocated 5 year BTech model with flexible exit options. If implemented, this could be one of the most significant structural shifts in India's engineering education system. However, its success will likely hinge on how well institutions manage the cost and stigma concerns it raises.

Issue: Standard Curriculum at All Institutions

The B.Tech curriculum in India is largely standardized, regardless of the student's rate of learning, background or abilities. Educationalists argue that such a standardized system is a significant source of pressure. The standardized methodology of teaching results in increased stress and anxiety levels, or even burnout or drop out, for some students.

Proposed Solution: Flexible Timelines

Not every student learn at same pace. Some understands faster than others, while others might take time. Putting all the students under the same time pressure may be unnecessarily stressful for them.

Under the proposed multi-exit plan, the students will no longer be bound to the rigid four-year tenure. For example, fast learners will graduate in three years with their B.Tech degrees by speeding up their coursework. This would help them enter the professional arena or continue their education early. The average learners will follow the four-year program.

The slower learners may opt for an extra year in the program without facing any consequences to their academics.

Problems in Regards to Cost and Stigma

There are still some problems in regards to the 5 year BTech. First, one of the major drawbacks involves the increased cost involved when choosing the five-year option due to the extra year of tuition, housing, and living costs. This makes it possible for the program to become costly and inaccessible to students from low-income families.

Another drawback involves the potential stigma associated with the five-year program where such students would be viewed as โ€œslowerโ€ than other students in academic terms.

Reconsideration of Pedagogic Approach

The issue of whether engineering departments must adopt an entirely new approach to teaching in general, instead of changing only timelines is debatable. The idea of flexible, 5 year degree must come with academic discussion from various institutes. It is claimed that the ability of students to follow their own learning path, the ability to study by modules, and continuous evaluation instead of rigid semester teaching may become necessary to adjust to differences in students' learning abilities. Without appropriate pedagogic changes, it is argued, the flexibility of timelines will not solve the fundamental problem of inadequate adaptation of curriculums to students' learning.
