GATE 2022 Postponement: Supreme Court agrees to hear exam postponement petitions urgently
Supreme Court agrees to hear petitions to postpone GATE 2022 on an urgent basis. Check details below.
GATE 2022 Postponement: A couple of petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the GATE 2022 exam in view of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2022 is scheduled to be conducted on February 5, 6, 12 and 13, 2022.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hima Kohli on February 2, 2022, agreed to list the matters urgently. Due to a large number of everyday cases of COVID-19 across India, the petitioners sought interim relief by putting a stay on conducting the GATE exam till the final decision in this matter. As per the petition, more than nine lakh students are likely to appear for the exam at around 200 exam centres across the country and the exam conducting authority, IIT Kharagpur, has not released any Covid-19 guidelines or set out procedures to assess the health conditions of students appearing for the exam.
Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has also released a travel pass for all GATE 2022 or Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2022 aspirants. It will help candidates to reach the GATE exam centre on exam day easily despite the COVID-19 restrictions in different states. GATE 2022 admit card was released by the exam conducting authority on January 15 on the official website i.e. gate.iitkgp.ac.in.

"With the current third wave, COVID-19 due to its new variant Omicron has spread severely in several states, cities. Several studies including one done by IIT Kanpur predict that the peak of the 3rd wave is expected in early February and the wave will end by April. Therefore, the peak is most likely to coincide with the usual exam dates of GATE," the petition read.
